Why Breakfast is the Most Important Meal of the Day

Posted by Caryn Bailey 4 Comments

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  After a long and restful night’s sleep, the body craves nourishment…energy to prepare for the day’s physical and mental activities.  Research demonstrates that children who start their day off with a healthy breakfast are more likely to do better academically and behaviorally in school, are more likely to have and maintain a healthy body weight, and in general eat healthier throughout the day.

So does it surprise you to hear that one in five children in this country go to school without breakfast? Whether it’s for lack of time, lack of knowledge, or lack of resources, it’s important that parents and caregivers understand how vital a healthy breakfast is for a growing child.

This week is National Breakfast Week and Kellogg’s has partnered with Action for Healthy Kids to share 1 million breakfasts with children in need.  If you’re wondering how you can help, it’s easy!  When you share your breakfast on the Share Your Breakfast Facebook tab or tweet what you had for breakfastwith the hash tag #shareurbreakfast, Kellogg’s will share a breakfast with a child in need.  You can also redeem an in-pack coupon for up to $5 off breakfast, buy a deal on LivingSocial, or order a  Collector’s Edition Spoon and Kellogg’s will share breakfast with kids in need for every spoon ordered.

Not only is breakfast the most important meal of the day, it’s our favorite meal of the day.  So I’m going to share with you our favorite breakfast foods:

Whole Grain Waffles

Oatmeal

Chicken Breast Sausage

Fresh Fruit

Cereal with Almond Milk

Is breakfast a challenge in your home?  How do you ensure your children eat a wholesome breakfast every single day?

This is part of a sponsored campaign with Kellogg’s. All opinions remain my own.

Now that I think about it, I never ate breakfast before school. I’m not a morning person and getting up 10 extra minutes to eat was not a priority, even in elementary school! I prefer my daughter eats something with whole grains so we usually have buckwheat pancakes (I made up a ton and then freeze them) or we also do a lot of oatmeal. But there are days when she has to eat breakfast in the car so we grab some dry cereal and go. 🙂

I never ate it as a kid, and I am still bad about it now, but I am always on my kids about it. I am always the do as I say, not as I do, but I need to be better about it myself. Time to follow my own words. better go eat….

Breakfast is so important. If I don’t eat breakfast I feel off all day!

Breakfast is so hard at home becuase morning are so hectic! I always get the kids fed but never manage to eat myself. I’ve never been a big breakfast person anyway. I so need to do better about it and remind my kids how important it is!
