When Mommy Has to Work…

Posted by Caryn Bailey 1 Comment

“Oscar, it’s time for Mommy to bring home the bacon.”  –Megan Calhoun, Oscar the Pig

I used to dream about a time when I could clock out at work for the very last time. I even pseudo-lived that “dream” when I took an entire year off to have my son.  I loved that 6 months I stayed home with him. We developed an incredible bond and I had the opportunity to spend those precious baby months with him as he was developing and changing so quickly.

I knew eventually I was going to have to go back to work.  We live in Southern California where the cost of living demands a dual-income family.  I dreaded it.  I begged, pleaded, and did everything I could to try to convince my husband to keep me home with my son.  But reality was staring me straight in the face and I had to come to terms with the idea of leaving my son to go to work.

No mother WANTS to leave their child to go to work but many moms find satisfaction in their given career. Despite the fact that I don’t like leaving my son, I do find fulfillment in what I do.  My job is important and highly specialized.  I am fortunate enough to have a family who takes joy in watching my son while I go to work, but many moms don’t have that option.

Children can develop separation anxiety at any time, despite the belief that it only happens during toddlerhood.  Children’s book author and Twittermoms founder Megan Calhoun, has written a delightful little book called Oscar the Pig:  Mommy Goes to Work.  It’s all about a little pig who is worried and scared about the fact that his mommy is going back to work.  When Mrs. Tutu (aka nanny hen) enters the scene, it’s a whole new world of discovery when she brings out her magic egg.

Childhood fears are normal and very common.  We’re just starting to deal with separation anxiety and I feel like this book addresses those fears in a way that children can understand.  The illustrations are adorable and the message is very sweet.  I love the subtle tips the author weaves into the story for helping children cope with separation anxiety.

You can purchase Oscar the Pig:  Mommy Goes to Work for $16.95 on the Silly Strings website!.

Profuse thanks to Megan Calhoun and Twittermoms for this review opportunity!

    Caryn,
Thanks for this post– I wasn’t aware of Megan’s book, but it is so helpful to have positive and entertaining ways for parents and children to work through the typical challenges of life successfully!

For those parents who may be finding that their child is not working their way out of separation anxiety, but rather working their way into it, you may want to check out my book, Freeing Your Child from Anxiety: Powerful, Practical Solutions to Overcome Your Child’s Fears, Worries and Phobias. There are scripts and exercises for kids from preschool to highschool (yes even teenagers can develop separation anxiety!).

If you’d like to read an excerpt, you can do so at: http://www.freeingyourchild.com

    All best,
    Tamar Chansky
