This giveaway is now closed. Congrats Patricia T!
A couple of weeks ago, a local restaurant chain hosted a free pancake day to raise money for an established children’s charity. I don’t typically go out to breakfast unless it’s a Saturday and the hubby is around, however, I felt like it was an important cause and thought it would make for a teachable moment with my son.
Perkins, a popular restaurant chain in the midwest, Florida, and Pennsylvania is hosting a free pancake day on Monday, March 21st to raise money for Give Kids The World (GKTW). This local, non-profit organization provides week-long vacations to children with life-threatening illnesses and their families at a “storybook” retreat in Central Florida. Every year 27,000 children are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and this organization seeks to improve the quality of some of these children’s lives. For 25 years, GKTW has served over 100,000 US and international families, providing them with a week-long vacation that includes accommodations at the GKTW Village, meals, donated attraction tickets, and more.
Perkins Restaurant & Bakery has supported the organization for 20 years and serves more than 200,000 free meals each year at the Gingerbread House Restaurant, located in the heart of the Give Kids The World Village. 420 US and Canadian restaurants will participate in Perkins Pancake Day and will serve guests their made-from-scratch buttermilk pancakes. Perkins would like guests to consider donating to GKTW. To find a participating location, just visit their website or Facebook page.
Win It! One of you will win a $50 gift card to Perkins. Simply leave me a comment with one way you teach your children to give back. Comments will close on March 30th, 2011 at 11:59 PM PST. US Residents only. Duplicates and comments not including the above information will be disqualified. Comments are moderated. If you don’t see your comment in a reasonable amount of time, send me an email. Bloggers and non-bloggers may enter. If you don’t want to leave your email address, please be sure to check back for my announcement on the winner. Please note that winners must respond within 48 hours of being announced/contacted or another winner will be drawn.

When my daughter was at home (she is grown now) I would have her do some volunteering during the summer months . Her favorite place to volunteer was the food bank. It taught her empathy, and it let her serve her community and hopefully see even a hot meal wasnt to be taken for granted. I volunteer there, so she was modeling my behavior at first- once she got to be 16 though she was able to do other things they needed help doing such as assisting the elderly etc. I think it benefitted her and made her a better person. She kept volunteering even after she got a part-time job, she never gave the time spent serving others completely up.

Kids learn by example. We recycle at home and at church so our daughter sees all that. If we go walking and see some litter, she notices and wants to pick it up and recycle it. We also help out at church so she sees that and hopefully will help more there as well as she grows up.

My kids are grown but starting when they were just babies I bought 2 of everything and gave one to toys for tots. This little gesture has grown into a 12 month commitment to toys for tots. 5 yrs ago I moved across country and my oldest daughter took over my activities in the east. My youngest daughter, mother of 6, is very active in her community and I have renewed my activities in the Valley of the Sun.

During the holidays, we have the kids pick out a toy that they want to donate to a charity.
The best way to teach children to ‘give back’ is to let them see you doing just that, talking about experiences, and then finding activities that they can participate in with you to accomplish charitable acts.
My kids volunteer their time at events such as the Fight for Air.
the best way to teach giving back is through example – like food donations and volunteering at the humane society

We collect toys all year for Toys For Tots at Christmas time.
dolniaks[at]consolidated[dot]net
Every year, we make Christmas bread or cookies for their teachers to show how much we appreciate them. We work at the Food Bank around the time of the food drives, we volunteer at the annual library book sale, and they USED donate a bunch of toys from their closet before Christmas so that underprivileged kids would have “new” toys, and my own kids would be making room for what they were going to get for Christmas. But now that thrift shops can’t sell toys anymore, we can’t do the last one. My kids are both thoughtful and caring, so hopefully I did enough!
