“I want to be a princess!”
“Well, I want to be a Captain America!”
My children love this time of year because they know that we’ll have many opportunities to “dress up” for the season. We’ve already been to Mickey’s Halloween Party and our local pumpkin patch ,and we haven’t even completed the first week in October.
Each year, my children’s costume choices differ. My son is very much into superheroes and LEGOs (specifically Ninjago), while my daughter would be content to dress like a princess every single day, if allowed.
If you haven’t already purchased your child’s costume, I encourage you to shop early, as every year our local stores run out of popular costumes. This year, our children’s favorite characters were found at Walmart, and since we shopped in September, we found a lot of different options. Their online variety seems to be much more expansive than in-stores, however, I found at least 4 sections of costumes in infant to adult sizes.
This year, superheroes and princesses are all the rage amongst children. Check out this year’s costume trends and my top picks for Halloween 2012:
Superheroes
2012 was the year of the superhero as Marvel’s The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight all achieved great successes at the box office. And it isn’t just boys who want to dress like their favorite superheroes. Even as a young girl, I admired and wanted to be like Supergirl. Check out these costumes we found for boys AND girls at Walmart:
Disney Princesses
Little girls will forever be captivated by the magic of Disney princesses. This year, princess costumes have been taken up a notch with plenty of accessories and deluxe options like Rapunzel’s Wedding Gown. Walmart offers several different Disney princess costumes and accessories:
Since my children typically outgrow their costumes each year, I appreciate the fact that many of the styles are between $10 and $20.This year, my son will dress as Captain America, my daughter Belle.
My son’s costume includes a jumpsuit with a muscle torso/arms and a character headpiece. The fabric is light and breathable so he can wear clothing underneath without getting too warm. The only thing we wish is that it came with the shield since we weren’t able to find it at our local Walmart.
My daughter’s golden dress features a sparkle overlay and we paired it with matching shoes, gloves, a crown, and a wand.

I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions.
