I almost can’t believe that by the end of this month, both of my kids will have started school. To say this Summer has flown by is an understatement, yet we’ve still managed to make the most of our time together, creating the types of memories that will live in our hearts long after the school bell has rung. Some of our greatest adventures have transpired right here in our city, a testament to the fact that experiences don’t have to be elaborate or expensive to be memorable.
One particular Summer afternoon, we decided to head to our local movie theater, an amusement we enjoy throughout the year. After seeking reprieve from the sweltering summer heat, we stepped outside to a rare summer storm that had us leaping through puddles, my kids’ faces turned up to feel the rare raindrops on their faces. These are exactly the types of simple, engaging experiences we share together as a family.
With the summer quickly drawing to a close, there haven’t been a wide selection of films specifically targeting my kids’ age group, which is why we’re excited to finally experience Shaun the Sheep Movie at our local theater this coming weekend. Inspired by the British stop-motion animated television series, Shaun the Sheep movies follows the story of Shaun and his flock, who find themselves overwhelmed in the Big City, far from their home at Mossy Bottom Farm. When Shaun decides he is in need of a day off, he gets more excitement and mischief than he expected and must devise a plan to return everyone safely to their home.
I’ve always been captivated by the beauty and intricacy of stop-motion animation. The technique involves the physical manipulation of an object so that it appears to move on its own. Dolls or clay figures are often utilized, which are moved in small increments between individually photographed frames to create the illusion of movement (Wikipedia). As complex and time-intensive as it might seem, the resulting work of cinematic art is unlike anything you’ll see in conventional animation. Stop-motion animation creates a type of realism that often leaves audiences guessing as to where the line between imagination and reality is drawn.
Additionally, each character is intricately developed with intriguing personalities that often mirror human characteristics. After the film, families can talk about the exciting adventures that Shaun and his flock endeavor upon and how they worked together to find their way back home.
In honor of the film’s August 7th release, here are my favorite Free Shaun the Sheep Movie Printables including coloring sheets and activity pages.
