I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.
-T.S. Eliot
After spending a few days away from home, I FINALLY got my iced coffee fix! A few weeks ago, I decided to give up my frou frou iced coffee habit and replace those +$4 drinks with my own using International Delight Iced Coffee. I’m a regular frequenter of places like Starbucks and Peet’s, and because I prefer blended coffee drinks, they add up quickly.
Offered in three varieties, International Delight Iced Coffee is made with 100% premium Arabica coffee and comes blended with skim milk, ready to drink. While I do enjoy it over ice, I decided to go one step further and blend the Mocha variety with ice to see if I could achieve something similar to what’s offered at some of the most frequented coffee houses.
I took about 8 ounces of Iced Coffee and blended it with ice until slushy.
Since whipped cream is a MUST, I decided to make my own using Organic Heavy Whipping Cream and about a tablespoon of powdered sugar.
The result was better than any local coffee house. The coffee blended well with the ice and I achieved the perfect slush consistency. Adding fresh whipped cream was just the icing on the cake and while not needed, definitely gave me that sweet creamy fix I was craving.
One of my concerns with frozen coffee drinks has always been the amount of sugar, fat, and calories. After doing a bit of research, I learned that most coffee houses serve drinks with upwards of 400 calories, more than 15 grams of fat, and as much as 67 grams of sugar. Yikes! I’m seriously rethinking whether I’ll ever purchase another one of those drinks unless I have access to nutritional information.
On the contrary, an 8 ounce glass of International Delight Iced Coffee is just 150 calories, 2.5 grams of fat, and 23 grams of sugar. Much more reasonable. Now I can justify that extra topping of fresh whipped cream!
To help me track of how much money I’ve saved, I have a calculator on my side bar. Since I’m on my own site nearly every day, it’s a good visual reminder for me. I love that it tallies up my savings automatically.
Since switching over to International Delight Iced Coffee, I’ve saved $67.76. I wish I had a calculator to tell me how many calories and grams of fat and sugar I’ve saved! : )
Towards the end of the month, I’ll tally up how much I saved overall and use that money to do something special.
