I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour conducted by Clever Girls Collective on behalf of Children’s Claritin®. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program.
Achoo! That’s me. And my son. We’re both sneezing and it’s JUNE! Part of the reason why we’re still suffering from allergies is the fact that every year, around this time, we have what’s called June Gloom. Mornings in Southern California are gray and drizzly, but come noon (ish), we warm up. The constant change in weather does a number on our allergies.
I’ve written a lot about my son’s struggles with food allergies. But he also suffers from seasonal allergies. As a “natural” parent, I tried to avoid allergy medication for a long time. But my son was constantly sneezing, coughing, and suffering from allergy symptoms and we finally collaborated with our Pediatrician to trial medication. His rationale was that if it worked, my son would have to undergo further testing to determine those specific allergens which he’s sensitive to. We’re currently seeing great results from my son’s trial on medication and our next step will likely be skin testing.
Apart from medication, here are some of the things we do to help keep allergies at bay:
1. Dust, vacuum (HEPA filter), and wash all bedding and stuffed toys to decrease or eliminate dust mites. Don’t forget to vacuum/dust the mini-blinds
2. Encase all mattresses and pillows to protect against dust mites
3. Change/clean the air filter once a month to remove allergens from your home
4. Use an air purifier
5. Opt for natural cleaning products.
6. Take a breath of fresh air. Open the windows, go for a walk.
7. Monitor humidity levels and keep them under 50 percent.
