One of the very first things to come out of my childrens’ mouths each morning is “I’m HUNGRY!” Some days, I can hold them off until I take a shower…most days that isn’t the case. We tend to eat early each evening to ensure our children go to bed with enough time to sleep 9-10 hours, which means by the time they wake up, they really are in a semi-starvation situation. I can’t imagine sending my kindergartener to school without the nourishment and fuel his body and brain need to learn each day. I can’t imagine my daughter dancing, jumping, and running at her preschool without any food in her tummy.
This week is National Breakfast Week, and schools across the country are helping to raise awareness surrounding both the importance of breakfast and the significant issue of child hunger in our country.
If you’ve been following my blog for any amount of time, than you know that the issue of child hunger is one I’m extremely passionate about. We live in a country with tremendous affluence and yet the statistics on child hunger are shocking. One in five children go to school hungry every single day. That means that one in five children are not meeting their full potential because children require regular intake of vital nutrients. Children who go to school without breakfast have difficulty concentrating, tend to have more absences, and overall are more likely to struggle with both academics and behavior.
Kellogg’s is helping to make a difference by setting a goal of sharing 1 million breakfasts to needy children in this country. Through the Share Breakfast Program, Kellogg’s will donate money to Action for Healthy Kids to help increase participation in the National School Breakfast Program. Celebrity Dad Taye Diggs has joined the initiative as the spokesperson for the campaign, and he had this message to share with us:
So how can you get involved? If you’re “social,” get involved with the Share Breakfast campaign on their Facebook page or via Twitter. For every person who watches, tweets, likes, or shares the PSA, Kellogg’s will share a breakfast to a child in need. Here is a visual guide to what breakfast can do for a child:
Kellogg’s has already shared 198,500 breakfasts to date. Will you help them reach their goal of sharing 1 million breakfasts to children in need?
