I was exhausted…I couldn’t get anything done. My little boy was about 5 months old and did NOT want to be in the swing…or on the floor…or in the bouncer…. He just wanted mommy. I am a breastfeeding, co-sleeping, babywearing mama…but mama needed a break! For weeks I kept eyeing the Fisher Price Jumperoo sitting unopened in the corner of our living room. Hubby was so busy with work that he was coming home late with barely enough time to eat dinner and spend some time with us before going to bed. I hinted a few times that I wanted to try putting our little one in the Jumperoo, hoping that would prompt hubby to open it up and put it together. I forgot that my husband doesn’t respond to hints. I am chronically sleep-deprived. I haven’t slept through the night once since my son was born (guess that makes 2 of us!). Well, on that particular day I must have been completely delirious because I grabbed that box and opened it up, completely ignoring those daunting words on the front of the box…Assembly Required.
Success! I’d like to say I put it together quickly and efficiently without any glitches. I had to take some of it apart because it was wrong. I almost called Jason with questions. But I was determined to do this on my own. Assembling that Jumperoo took more time than it should have but it felt so good and my son LOVED it! He jumped himself to sleep! Well…not literally. I called hubby right away and gave him the good news (I didn’t gloat…I promise) that I didn’t need him after all! Ha! Do you know what he did when he got home? He INSPECTED the Jumperoo. He wanted to make sure that I had put it together correctly. What a way to pop a child’s balloon! I am delighted to tell you that my workmanship passed my husband’s safety inspection.
All this to say…society stereotypes the roles of men and women. I do believe that there are things my husband can do that I cannot and vice-versa. I’m glad that we have distinct, unique roles that sometimes overlap. However, my husband does a much better job of cooking, managing our finances, and organizing. To be honest…I have to stop and brag about my husband. He is a wonderful father and husband who works hard to provide for us and take care of us. I’d like to say that I can change a tire or fix a broken [fill-in-the-blank]. But for now I’m content to be successful at putting together my son’s new favorite form of entertainment. Maybe I’ll tell you about how I assembled his high chair….ooooh!!!
