How To Put Items on Layaway at Walmart

We’re two months from Christmas, and my children already have a list of toys and items they are hoping will end up under our tree.  Now that they’re older (and smarter), “hiding” their gifts is getting tricky.  We don’t have a ton of closet space to hide toys, and those spaces that might work are open and easily accessible to a determined 6-year old.  Not only would that completely ruin the element of surprise, we’d have to answer a lot of questions about the authenticity of a certain bearded figure rumored to ride in a sleigh eating cookies and handing out gifts on Christmas Eve. For that reason alone, Walmart’s Christmas Layway program is brilliant.

Christmas Layaway at Walmart

A few years ago, Walmart brought back their Layaway program, and families across the country have been using it to shop earlier in order to make a great Christmas affordable.  This year, the program is free which means you don’t have to worry about opening fees and gift card reimbursements.  Here is a video my family made showing just how easy it is to put items on layaway at Walmart.

Apart from getting a head start on your Christmas shopping, there are other reasons layaway makes sense.  Do you have multiple people to shop for?  Are friends or family members requesting big-ticket items?  Are you worried that a popular toy will sell out this season?  Do you have uber curious kids with stealth gift-spotting capabilities?  Then layaway is for you!

So how does layaway work?  Here is a brief overview of the process which is even easier (and free) this year:

1.  Identify those items you want to put on layaway. This year, Walmart offers more than 35,000 items in the following departments: electronics, toys, jewelry, small appliances and select sporting goods.

2.  Ensure that each item is at least $15 and that the purchase totals $50 or more.

3.  Visit your Walmart.com Services Desk and complete your down payment (this is either $10 or 10% of the purchase price, whichever is greater)

4.  Make payments on your items at any cash register at your local Walmart between now and December 13th.

5.  Pick up your items before December 13th, 2013 at the Walmart.com Services Desk.

*If you need to cancel a layaway item, Walmart will refund the down payment and any additional payments made, minus a $10 cancellation fee.

Layaway at Walmart

I personally like the idea of shopping early because my children typically request the most popular toys of the season.  Putting these items on layaway ensures that I don’t have to explain why Santa didn’t bring the REAL Baby Alive Doll that shakes her head no and tinkles in her diaper (because 3 year-olds can most certainly distinguish an impostor). If you have any reservations about shopping this early in the season, Walmart’s Ad Match Guarantee should put you at ease.  If you find an identical item advertised in a local competitor’s printed ad for lower price, Walmart will match that price at the Walmart.com Services Desk.
