How to Grow An Indoor Garden

One of the things I love about owning a home is the freedom to grow a garden.  While I’ve had some success with roses, lemons, and blackberries, the winter, in particular is a struggle. Many plants require an outdoor environment, particularly with lots of exposure to light in order to grow.  But interestingly enough, there are quite a few plants that can grow indoors and be transferred outdoors once they’ve begun to germinate and grow while others can remain indoors year-round.

AeroGarden

Since we’re in the midst of winter but the kids and I love picking and eating the fresh fruits we’ve been able to grow in our backyard, I thought I’d try Miracle-Gro’s new AeroGarden. This soil-free indoor garden uses hydroponics to create the optimal growing environment for fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers and other plants. Beyond having ready access to fresh produce, having an indoor garden can help teach children about food and where it comes from and is a great way to keep the air inside your home clean.

Growing an Indoor Garden

Setting up the Miracle-Gro AeroGarden 3SL was easy and took just a few minutes.  The kit comes with a Lamp Hood & Base, a Bowl & Grow Deck, a Grow Light and a Seed Pod pocket (which includes the Grow Domes and Nutrients) which is everything you’ll need to begin to grow an indoor garden. Once you’ve attached the Grow Light to the base, you’ll fill the bowl with water, add the seed pods, cover the pods with grow domes and add liquid plant food.  Plug in the unit and your garden is ready to grow.

Apart from the ease of set-up and the innovation, the unit is slim and attractive, making it ideal for a kitchen, an office, or other small space. With its scientifically proven, dirt-free growing technology, most plants will germinate within 7-14 days and ready for harvest in 4-6 weeks.  These plants could continue to produce harvests for 6 months or longer which makes it incredibly cost-efficient to grow your own herbs and produce. Since we’re conscious about purchasing organic produce whenever feasible, this system is a great way to eliminate our family’s exposure to pesticides and other chemicals since the seeds are free from GMO’s and source organically when possible.

Miracle Gro AeroGarden

We’re currently waiting for the first seeds we planted (Heirloom Salad Greens) to germinate.  The minimal maintenance required includes monitoring the water level and adding the liquid nutrients when indicated on the Control Panel. Since the Grow Lights automatically cycle to stay on for 16 hours during the day, this is the ideal indoor garden for anyone like myself who doesn’t feel like they have a green thumb.

Miracle-Gro’s AeroGarden 3 SL with Gourmet Herb Seed Pod Kit is available exclusively at Walmart for $49.97 and would make a great gift this Holiday season. You can find a list of stores by visiting AeroGarden.com.

Be sure to come back in a couple of weeks to see how our indoor garden grows!
