I am afraid (terrified!) of spiders. There. I said it. I have been known to call hubby while he is at work begging and pleading and maybe even shedding a tear or two in anguish over having to dispose of (this is a family-friendly blog you know!) a spider. But now I am a mother. And I have a little boy who is depending on his mommy to be strong and brave. He is counting on the fact that his mommy is going to protect him from the big, ugly spider.
So as it goes, yesterday I happen to walk into the bedroom and low and behold I see an 8 legged terror on my wall. Everything in me wanted to scream but I had enough self-control to calmly and rationally devise a plan to get rid of said creature. And then I broke down and called hubby. Unfortunately my son is at an age where he can sense when mommy is happy, sad, or frustrated. He began crying and it took me several minutes to calm him down. All because I was scared of a creature that most likely won’t hurt us, is probably just as afraid of us as we are of him, and is maybe 1 100th of my size.
I realized in that moment that I had to grow up. All I wanted was to run to my hubby or call my dad on the phone. But it was just me and my little boy and since I couldn’t run to him and hide I decided to be brave and dispose of said creature. Our fears don’t disappear simply because our roles in life change. I don’t suppose I expected to naturally become the stoic rock that I feel I should be to my son. But I definitely don’t want to run under the covers like a 5 year old girl every time I’m afraid of something.
Being a mom has stretched me in so many ways. I’m even killing spiders!
How do you deal with your fears in front of your children? I’d love your candid comments.
