I thoroughly enjoy baking…and it’s rubbing off on my son. We have this “cooking” game that we play…and some mornings I’ll hear him “making” recipes. “First we need the flour…then we need the sugar…then we need…” Listening to my son get excited about “baking” warms my heart (hehe!).
We eat a lot of applesauce…regularly…daily. And that’s not something I aspire to make anytime soon (I’ve heard it’s pretty labor intensive). So we buy all-natural applesauce…the kind made with, well, apples…and water. My son eats it for a snack (with his vitamins added in), I use it in place of oil, and create delicious morning breads with it. And it’s versatile enough to be used in other types of savory main and side dishes.
Easter is around the corner…and many of you will likely cook/bake and host friends and family. Musselman’s (a company that makes applesauce) offers a wide variety of applesauce-themed recipe ideas for nearly every type of dish you’re looking to create (sweet, savory, etc.). But what’s interesting…is that you can make a craft out of applesauce? Check out this recipe for Bunny Place Cards:
Bunny Place Cards
Craft Supplies:
½ cup Musselman’s Apple Sauce
½ cup + 2 Tbsp cinnamon (one 2.37 oz bottle)
Wax paper
Bunny cookie cutter
Paint pens/ Glitter glue pens
Instructions:
Stir together Musselman’s Apple Sauce and ½ cup cinnamon until the dough becomes stiff. Knead the dough with your hands for several minutes until it holds together and is completely incorporated. (If the mixture is a bit wet, add 1 Tbsp of flour, and knead until you don’t see any remaining white flour.)
Place the ball of dough on a sheet of waxed paper and flatten it slightly with your fingers.
Place a second sheet of waxed paper over the top of the dough and roll it out to about ¼ inch thick. Use the bunny cookie cutter to cut out the dough (makes 4 bunnies).
Place bunnies on a cookie sheet that has been sprinkled with 2 Tbsp of cinnamon and bake at 200 degrees for approx 2 hours. Turn bunnies over several times during baking to ensure they dry evenly and the edges don’t curl. Brush off the excess cinnamon and let air-dry overnight on cooling racks before decorating.
Once bunnies are completely dry have some family decorating fun. Use a paint pen or glitter glue pen to write each person’s name on a bunny and use them as place cards on your Holiday Dinner table.
Tips:
-For an extra special sparkle, add glitter to the dough before rolling it out.
-Decorate your bunny creations with acrylic paint, ribbons or fabric.
-To add a little extra strength to the craft, you can add 1 Tbsp of white craft glue to dough.
Not only is the recipe easy (but takes some time), it’s fun to create and practical. And if you’re looking for a kid-friendly dish for this coming Easter brunch, check out their Bunny-Face Side Dish (you can download activity sheets from their Facebook page):
Bunny-Face Side Dish
Ingredients:
1/2 cup Musselman’s Apple Sauce (per person)
1/2 cup any flavor yogurt (per person)
Edible decorating extras (raisins, nuts, coconut, dried fruit, candies, licorice, etc)
Printed sheet of bunny details (right click on the images below and select “save as” to download the files to your computer)
Instructions:
Give each child a small dessert-size bowl. Add ½ cup of yogurt to ½ cup of Musselman’s Apple Sauce (or equal parts) for each bowl. (This creates the perfect texture for adding your decorations.) Use your favorite edible extras to create a silly bunny face in the bowl. Let your kids be creative! Cut the bunny ears and bow tie from the sheet provided and let the kids color. Tape them to the outside of the bowl, and voila now you have a healthy side-dish that’s more fun to eat!
You can also create a larger serving-bowl size bunny face to place on the Holiday Dinner table.
