As I raise my two beautiful babies…I can’t help but think back to my own childhood. I grew up as an only child, so I spent a lot of time with my mom baking, playing with dolls and games, and doing “projects.” Every year we’d decorate Easter eggs (I’d of course have to go find them too!). While my parents always emphasized the real meaning of Easter, I still remember Easter baskets and Good Friday services and Sunday brunch.
I am committed to ensuring that my children know the meaning and history behind certain holidays like Easter and Christmas. However, I still think that these holidays can be celebrated in ways that are fun and meaningful to children. Last year, my son was really too young to decorate eggs. This year, however, he can’t get enough of this activity (we’ve already done it twice!).
As a child, I remember using PAAS decorating kits. I have to laugh when I think about my father poking holes at the top and bottom of each egg and blowing out the contents! These days it’s just easier to buy a package of a dozen white eggs to hard boil and color.
While the technique is the same (add water and vinegar to a dye tablet in the kit), the kits now include activities for children. This year, PAAS introduced 5 new kits designed to take egg decorating to another crafty and creative level. Here they are:
Neon: Add pops of bright color to your basket with fun stickers and glitter pen.
Mini Monsters: Get silly and crazy with the PAAS Mini Monsters kit! Dress eggs with string, face stickers and fuzzy hair to create your favorite monster character.
Egg-Quarium: Take a dip under the sea with PAAS Egg-Quarium. Decorate eggs to look like fish, underwater treasures, scuba divers and more!
Coloring Creations: Just like a coloring book, kids can egg-spress their creativity by decorating their own stickers and egg stands.
Build-a-Basket: This kit not only provides all the materials needed to embellish eggs, but also includes two Easter baskets that can be personalized with festive stickers and crayons.
We received a few kits in the mail to try out. My son absolutely loved dying and decorating the eggs. I was quite pleased with the activities in the kit (although they definitely require adult supervision). He really liked creating and putting the eggs in baskets but was most amused by the monster hair. The new colors are vibrant and the entire activity is fun, easy to accomplish, and not overly time consuming.
Kits retail for $2.99-$3.99 (so affordable) and are available for purchase at retailers nationwide.

I used PAAS too. We used lemon juice instead of vinagar.
