Curology – Custom Online Acne Treatment + Win a 1-Year Subscription

At almost 40, I thought my breakout days were behind me. As a teen, I suffered from acne that was mild enough to be brushed aside as “normal” for a teenager but severe enough to alter my complexion. A myriad of topical treatments and time curbed the problem but left me with several dark spots that lightened but never fully disappeared. My routine became to simply cover up those spots with makeup, since I had very little success with facials and over-the-counter remedies.

The Long Term Effects of Chronic Acne

My skin began to change again during my first pregnancy. For years I experienced only the occasional breakout, likely associated with stress, my failure to remove my makeup at night, or indulging my sweet tooth. A few months into my pregnancy and my complexion resembled my former teenage self. As you can imagine, my treatment options were limited, and once again, I was left with dark spots.

Acne – The Most Common Skin Condition in the US

Acne is the most common skin condition in the US, but many people don’t seek treatment for a variety of reasons. At present, I am waiting 4+ weeks to see my dermatologist for another skin condition. My teenage self would never have scheduled an appointment with wait times that long. Even as an adult, I have opted for over-the-counter remedies in lieu of waiting over a month to see a dermatologist. Cost, accessibility, and medication side effects are all barriers acne sufferers face.

As a woman who has been self-conscious about my skin for much of my life, I resolved to just continue covering up the scars my bouts with acne left behind. My pigmented skin doesn’t make me an ideal candidate for laser treatments, so my choices are very limited.

Curology Medication

Curology – Customized Online Skin Care

A few weeks ago, Curology reached out to inquire about my interest in trying their customized, online skincare. The company was founded by Dermatologists David Lortscher and Nancy Satur, who drew from their clinical experience to create personalized treatments with customized products prescribed by licensed healthcare providers. To help overcome the barrier of access, the two decided to create an online platform where patients can receive a customized prescription medication from a team of dermatologists, board-certified physician assistants and board-certified nurse practitioners.

How Does Curology Work?

Whether you have chronic acne, clogged pores, dark spots, or wrinkles, the team at Curology can help prescribe a regimen that will help you achieve your skincare goals. The medications that Curology prescribes can also help improve the texture and firmness of your skin.

  • To begin, simply create an account by visiting Curology.com.

Medical History

Skin Concerns

Skin Goals

  • Take a questionnaire that will help your provider understand your medical history, current skincare regimen and ultimate skincare goals

Curology Photos

  • Upload photos of the areas you would like to treat. I recommend taking high-resolution photos in natural light without makeup so your provider can make an accurate assessment of your skin’s condition.

Personal Dermatology Provider

  • Your provider will prescribe a medication based on his/her assessment, and you can begin using that medication nightly once you have received it.
  • Be sure to track your progress online by posting photos. I like to take weekly photos so I can see how my skin is reacting to the medication. Remember that you can always ask your provider for a new formula consultation if you do not feel like you are achieving the desired results. Similarly, if you are experiencing side effects, you will want to let your provider know immediately. I was experiencing some dryness from the medication, which is typical for my skin. I sent a message to my provider, who suggested I temporarily stop using the medication until the dryness resolved. I then restarted the regimen and have not experienced subsequent dryness.

Curology Results

Does Curology Work?

At present, I have been using my prescribed medication from Curology for six weeks and have already noticed some lightening of the dark spots on my skin. But like most skincare treatments, it can take 6-8 weeks to see improvement (but most patients do see results between 3 and 4 weeks).

For more information about Curology or to sign up for their free trial, visit Curology.com.
