From the moment we walked into Corazon Modern Kitchen, we were immersed in the food and culture of Mexico. Artwork inspired by Frida Kahlo lines the vibrant walls while live music plays in the background. Located in downtown Brea, Corazon Modern Kitchen serves up an eclectic menu with dishes inspired by the traditions of Michoacán.

Corazon Modern Kitchen
Corazon Modern Kitchen celebrates its one-year anniversary this year, but the restaurant actually has its origins in Rolling Hills Estates. Established in 1985, Corazon Modern Kitchen was born out of a passion for food and the culinary heritage of Michoacán Mexico. In a space that radiates freedom, Corazon Modern Kitchen boasts a bold menu with modern flavors. The restaurant is located in the heart of downtown Brea and is owned by chef Fernando Romero.
Corazon Modern Kitchen Menu
The menu at Corazon Modern Kitchen offers a diverse mix of flavors and dishes, perfect to appease even the pickiest eater. As you might expect, tacos and enchiladas are highlights of the menu, however, they are prepared with a modern twist. The most popular items on the menu include a Tomahawk stake prepared with Nopalitos, El Tamal (an open-faced tamale), Hibiscus Mole Enchiladas, Seabass Tacos, and housemade Horchata. Chef Romero also brews his own beer and has a selection of crafted adult beverages including Tamarindo Winerita and a Passion Fruit Mule.
During our visit, we started with the Guacamole, which features mild fresh jalapenos and a guacamolito sauce topped with queso fresco. Their chips are some of the best I’ve had.
The sizzling fajitas included a choice of chicken, carne asada, or shrimp and were served with bell peppers, onions, a choice of corn or flour tortillas, and rice and beans. This dish was as good as it looked and offered a generous enough portion to enjoy as leftovers the next day.
Flautas are one of my daughter’s favorite dishes, so she could not pass up an opportunity to try the chef’s take on these traditional rolled tacos. Each tortilla is filled with marinated shredded chicken and topped with crema fresca, guacamolito sauce, shredded lettuce, pico de Gallo, and queso cotija.
If you like seafood, I highly recommend the seabass tacos. This was such a unique but flavorful dish and I loved having a fish alternative to the traditional shrimp taco. Grilled seabass is served on corn tortillas and topped with cabbage, Cabo San Lucas sauce, pico de gallo, avocado, and cilantro and includes rice and beans.
We could not decide on dessert, so we opted for their dessert flight, which includes a sampling of the restaurant’s signature sweets. Tres Leches Cake, NY Cheesecake Flan, and Abuelita Tiramisu are served in glasses and each is rich in flavor and absolutely decadent.
