Here in sunny California, it feels like we missed out on Spring. It feels like we went from temperate to hot in days! But in many parts of the country, spring is still very much the season. I am a chronic allergy sufferer so I do as much as I can to limit my exposure to indoor and outdoor allergens. I’ve done a lot of research on allergens and greening our home, and one of the things I’ve learned is that indoor air can be just as toxic as outdoor air.
According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), studies indicate that indoor levels of many pollutants may be two to five times higher than outdoor levels, making it one of the top five urgent environmental risks to public health (via Mom Central). Any time you clean or re arrange items in your home, there is the potential to spread indoor pollutants, which have been linked to poor concentration in children, asthma, and allergies.
If you haven’t considered “greening your clean,” this is one way to improve the health of your home. Avoid any products with chlorine or ammonia. Other pro active steps you may want to take include using houseplants, using area rugs instead of wall-to-wall carpeting, leaving shoes outside, turning up the AC, turning off the humidifier, limiting your pet’s access to certain areas of your home (i.e. bedrooms) and installing a high performance air filter, such as a Filtrete filter. The site is actually extremely educational. On it you’ll find tips on improving indoor air quality from Dr. Neil Schachter, M. D., past president of the American Lung Association of the City of New York. The site also has a fact/fiction test to assess your knowledge of indoor air quality where you could win a home inspection from Steve Ramos, the featured home inspector on HGTV’s House Detective. If you sign up for the Clean Air Club, you’ll receive seasonal e-newsletters with special offers, filter change reminders (they should be changed every 3 months, at the start of a new season), better home living tips, and more. The first 50 people to sign up each week will receive a free bamboo plant (a natural air purifier).
If you’re looking to clean up the air in your home, check out Filtrete!

The filtrete filters are good but they are little more expensive due to paying for the brand name. I have been using Nordic Pure filters, which are actually rated for higher performance last time I checked.
Visit the link below and they will give you a free filter on your first order!
