My son really enjoys “reading” and exploring with his Tag Junior. One day, when he’s old enough, we’ll upgrade to the Tag Reading System, the number one best-selling reading system which has won over 28 awards. My son’s not quite ready for it yet, but I wanted to share with you a new series for the system that is helping children learn to read. I attended a conference not too long ago, and one of the speakers said that the earlier a child learns to read, the less difficulties he/she will have throughout the school years. LeapFrog also believes that learning to read is an essential first step towards a child’s success.
The company has just released two Learn To Read Series. Here is a short description from the site:
These six-book sets combine engaging stories with rich audio to help kids identify letters and letter sounds and hear how they combine to form words, building their independence, knowledge, and confidence along the way. Kids can hear stories read in their entirety, hear individual words, see and hear word spellings and hear words sounded out letter by letter, all key steps toward reading fluency.
The first set focuses on short vowels while the second set focuses on long vowels, silent E and Y. It’s phonics for kids! Throughout the book series, certain letter teams are highlighted in yellow, which emphasize a single sound or words with irregular decoding patterns. Parents and children work together to say, sound and spell words. There are also games that can be played. I honestly wish I had a Tag, just so I could really tell how it works. But, from what I’ve read, it’s a fantastic reading program and I plan on using it with my son when he’s old enough. Each series has a review book so parents and children can reinforce what has been learned.
Each book set comes with six books and retails for $19.99 (which I think is a fantastic price, considering what your child will be learning).
For most of your children, school probably started this week (it did for my son). Sometimes children have a hard time returning to school, after being home all summer with their parents. Perhaps they need a little motivation to get back into the routine of things. Maybe this is your child’s first time going to school. My son has been going to preschool since the summer and he still cried yesterday when I dropped him off since he had been on vacation with us for over 2 weeks.
LeapFrog has released a new DVD entitled Let’s Go To School, which was designed to ease first day jitters. Here is a little more information about the DVD from the site:
School starts tomorrow, and Tad and Lily are nervous! Join Tad, Lily and their magical firefly Edison as he shows them that the classroom is more nervous than they are! As the twins calm the blocks, globe, clock and more first-class characters, they build skills that help them get ready for school.
The DVD is about 30 minutes and very cute. I like how it emphasizes concepts such as counting, the alphabet, seasons, the days of the week, and months of the year. It does a wonderful job of explaining school concepts and alleviating fears. The music is upbeat and fun and the characters are just lovable. I think the most appealing part of this DVD is the amount of learning that kids can get from it. It’s available now for $14.98.
When you visit the LeapFrog site, you’ll find that each product contains a description of the concepts your child will learn. I find it reassuring to know that while their toys are fun, they’re also educational.
