Birthdays are a big deal in our family. As a young girl, I remember waking up to balloons, a cake, presents, and two very excited parents grateful for another year of their daughter’s life. Long after the presents were opened and forgotten about, I still remember the way my parents celebrated each year of my life and I brought that joy into my own family.
Some years, we talk about my kids’ birthday parties literally 6 months from said day. We talk about the venue, the theme, and the people they want to celebrate this momentous occasion. My kids are still very much connected to the characters they see on-screen, so I wasn’t surprised when my son asked if he could have an Avengers: Age of Ultron Birthday Party. Perfectly timed for the theatrical release of the film, Walmart sent us everything we could ever need for the party. Since the venue we settled on provided pizza, my only purchases included an Avengers: Age of Ultron Cake, snacks and drinks. Along with showcasing the incredible selection of licensed birthday party items at Walmart, here are my best tips for planning a birthday party they will remember.
Set a Date. I’m busy…so busy that I often find myself planning my kids’ birthday parties with less than a month of lead time. It’s only in the past year or so that I’ve become more purposeful about setting a date very close to my child’s actual birth date and then sending out invites (or even save-the-date cards) immediately. This will ensure that your child will have as many of his/her friends in attendance as possible.
Choose a Theme. Admittedly, planning my kids’ birthday parties at this stage in their lives is relatively easy and straightforward. Once they’ve selected the overarching character theme, I simply have to purchase the paper goods, decor, and favors to complement the theme.
Reserve Your Preferred Venue. When my kids were babies, I opted for venues that required a lot of effort on my part. I quickly learned that there is value in paying a little more for the assistance of a dedicated staff member to ensure the party progresses smoothly and no detail gets overlooked. Venues like Pump It Up are often booked weeks to months in advance which means you’ll want to secure your spot as soon as you know the date and time of your party. If you have some flexibility, mid-week parties are often priced slightly lower than weekend parties.
Serve Simple Dishes. Every time I feel compelled to order gourmet fruit or cheese platters, I remind myself that the kids just want to celebrate with the birthday boy/girl. As my kids get older, I’m also noticing a trend in the “drop-off” party, which means the amount of adults in attendance is low. If the venue offers the option to order pizza or other quick-serve foods, this will alleviate some of the stress and effort required as you plan all of the intricate details of your child’s birthday party.
Make it Memorable. Even with a straight-forward character-themed party, simple touches like a DIY craft or activity will elevate your party and keep it near to your child’s heart long after the candles have blown out.
I also order a custom cake to celebrate my kids and help them feel special. From the exterior design to the filling, Walmart offers ultimate customization when it comes to birthday cakes. Be sure to order your cake at least 24 hours in advance (although I recommend 48 hours to give you a bit of a buffer). Remember that for your child’s first birthday, Walmart offers a free smash cake so be sure to ask when placing your order.
Don’t forget to thank your guests by gifting them a small favor at the end of the party. I like to incorporate a variety of items including party-themed toys and activities and healthy snacks.
