We’ve finally cooled down here in Southern California and with rain forecasted for Halloween, it already feels like winter. The combination of cooler weather and another school year means we spend just a bit more time indoors reading books and practicing oral reports during the week and shopping, baking and prepping for the holidays come the weekend. The stress of the season combined with the cooler weather and close proximity to others means that one or all of us inevitably end up with some type of bug. While we all take probiotics and vitamins throughout the year, this is the time when I really work to boost all of our immune systems, particularly through the foods we eat.
In honor of the coming winter season, I decided to make an easy Antioxidant Salad Recipe. Walmart recently introduced their new Organic Marketside Produce line in stores across the country and I was excited to find several of those items at my local store. Currently, Walmart offers 50 different organic produce items which can easily be identified with their new purple organic label and USDA organic seal. Some stores (2300 to be exact) will have a designated organic section, but in my particular store I was able to identify the organic products by a purple flag in the section where I normally find each type of produce. Some of the items available include avocados, apples, carrots, broccoli, onions, kale, rainbow chard, grapes, potatoes, strawberries, packaged salads and juice. My store already had a wide variety and I can’t wait to see Organic varieties of my kids’ favorite fruits like strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries.
Since I was looking for foods high in antioxidants, I picked up a package of Organic Spinach and Arugula ($3.28), a bag of Organic Gala Apples ($3.97), a bag of Organic Carrots ($1.98), Pomegranate Arils, goat cheese, and almonds for this Antioxidant Salad. Toss the ingredients together with a touch of Fuji Apple dressing and serve immediately.
Organic produce, in general, always seems to look and taste better and this was absolutely true with the produce I purchased. The apples were gorgeous and practically flawless and tasted juicy and sweet. I picked up a bag of carrot sticks that had already been peeled, cut, and washed and as a whole, they looked vibrant while having the perfect blend of crunch and moisture. Pre-packaged salads can be difficult to purchase since the lettuce, spinach, kale, or arugula is already pre-washed, limiting the shelf life. I used the salad I purchased the next day and it was still fresh. I like the convenience of packaged salads but I recommend planning to use it within a day or so of purchase to enjoy it at its maximum freshness.
One of the deterrents to purchasing Organic foods (particularly produce) is the cost. Walmart strives to have the lowest prices on all items, including their new Marketside Organic Produce items. All of the ingredients purchased for this salad were just under $25 which can sound daunting. However, this salad will easily feed 4 people and I’ll be able to use the apples, carrots, and other ingredients throughout the week for additional meals.
I tend to purchase a variety of organic foods in general so the launch of Walmart’s new Marketside Organic Produce line is just one additional way our family will be able to save money while striving to eat healthy. The items can be found in the produce section at your local Walmart.
