It is the middle of the first week of school, and I woke up with a sore throat. While it’s likely seasonal allergies, I decided to be more consistent with my daily probiotics and overall wellness regime. As a mom and a nurse, I am passionate about health and wellness and I make concerted efforts to keep us all healthy. A healthy diet, physical activity, regular sleep schedules and minimizing stress are just some of the ways our family stays healthy. I have also incorporated probiotics into our family’s wellness routine.
What are probiotics?
Probiotics are the “good” bacteria that naturally exist in cultured and fermented foods. You’ve likely heard that yogurt is a source of probiotics, however, certain cheeses fermented drinks can also contain these “good” bacteria. Probiotics offer many benefits to the digestive system, and subsequently the immune system. I take a probiotic supplement to increase the “good” bacteria in my gut for digestive and overall health.
How to choose a probiotic
With so many probiotics available in-stores, I have found it difficult to choose the best one. A few months back, I was introduced to Nature Made Advanced Probiotics. What makes this particular brand of probiotics effective is that it contains two clinically studied strains and 15 Billion live cultures per serving*. One strain works in the small intestine to relieve occasional gas, bloating, and abdominal discomfort. The other strain works in the large intestine to relieve occasional constipation and irregularity. Nature Made Advanced Probiotics are 100% vegetarian, gluten & dairy free and gentle enough for everyday use. I have been taking a daily probiotic for years for overall health and wellness and appreciate the regularity and immune support they provide.
How to get the most out of your probiotic supplement
- Take probiotics with food: I typically take any supplement with a meal to decrease the chance that it may upset my stomach. Probiotics are ideally taken with food to minimize the chance that stomach acid will affect the probiotics. It is also recommended that you eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables to help the probiotics you take flourish.
- Take probiotics daily: It is also important to be consistent, since it can take up to 2 weeks for the full benefit of the probiotics to take effect.
- Store probiotics properly: While refrigeration is not required, it is important to store probiotics at room temperature in a cool, dry place.
5 Back-to-School Health Tips
The change of seasons and the new school year often trigger a higher incidence of colds and flus. A few simple lifestyle changes make all the difference in ensuring our immune systems are as healthy as possible.
- Choose healthy foods. A healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains is vital for growing kids. Seek to minimize intakes of sugar, saturated fats, sodium and processed foods to maintain health.
- Make a sleep schedule and stick to it. School-aged children (6-13) require 9-11 hours of sleep. Sleep is vital for growth and development, immune function, and mood.
- Minimize stress. Digestive balance is affected by stress. Minimize daily stress levels for optimal gut health and overall wellness.
- Maintain an active lifestyle. Physical activity is essential for overall health and wellness. Not only can regular physical activity help maintain weight, it can boost mood and immune system function.
- Take probiotics. The benefits of probiotics are numerous. A daily probiotic can help support gut and immune system function. I found Nature Made Advanced Probiotics easily at my local Kroger store. There is a section in the health and wellness department that contains probiotics which is where the product was located.
