As glamorous as it seems, the logistics of travel can be exhausting. If I am packed before 11 pm, it is nothing short of a miracle. The anxiety of catching an early morning flight, ensuring that I’ve remembered deodorant (don’t ask me how many times I’ve forgotten this essential), and scrambling to find a decent latte are almost enough to forego the entire venture. It is only when I’ve finally settled into my hotel room with a warm cup of tea and my laptop, that I’m reminded that the journey is part of the excitement.

One of the simplest, yet impactful services a hotel can provide is complimentary essentials. The anxiety of trying to navigate an unknown city in search of toothpaste can put a damper on an otherwise idyllic getaway. Because I’ve forgotten everything from a razor blade to my toothbrush, I am mindful of the types of items people can overlook during the stress of packing and preparing for an upcoming trip.
From time to time, I have family and friends stay with me when they visit Sunny California. I like to keep a stocked welcome basket in my guest room for visiting house guests. It is filled with toiletries and essentials such as shampoo and conditioner, laundry detergent, fresh towels, and body wash. I also like to include some luxury items such as a candle, dark chocolate, a bottle of water, tea bags, and a good book.
How to Put Together a Guest Welcome Basket
Start with the essentials! Think about the items that are essential for beginning your day. I like to include a toothbrush/toothpaste, shampoo/conditioner, a hair brush, body wash, towels, and laundry detergent. Specifically, I include gentle products like the new sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® and sulfate free AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner. I am very conscious of the products I use on my body and around my home, and I strive to provide my houseguests with products that I can feel comfortable with. The NEW sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® delivers a powerful clean without harshness. I chose this particular formula because it infuses fabrics with proven effective ingredients for deep cleaning and stain lifting on the toughest stains.
all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® is located on the top shelf in the laundry aisle at your local Walmart, and right now, you can save $.50 off one product while supplies last.
I also included AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner, which contains naturally derived cleansers and a sulfate free formula to gently cleanse your hair and scalp. This particular formula is in line with my efforts to live a healthy lifestyle and my hope is to inspire my guests towards the same goals. You can find AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner in the Hair Care aisle at your local Walmart, and right now, you can save $1.00 off one (1) AVEENO® product (excludes trial and travel sizes).
Get creative with the basket. I like to put all of my essentials and luxury items in a generously-sized basket that can double as a laundry basket. Decorate the basket with ribbon and add a personalized note. The basket I purchased from Walmart includes a mini chalkboard which can be used to write a welcome message to guests.
Make it personal. Spend some time getting to know the guests who will be staying at your house. Do they love dark chocolate? Are they a coffee aficionado? You can then add a few personalized items like a candle in their favorite scent, and/or their favorite snacks.
Pamper your guests. Once you have picked out essential gift basket items, think outside of the box to include a few luxury items that they may not expect. A pair of inexpensive flip flops, an eye mask, and a bestselling novel can help your guests feel special and welcomed without spending a lot of money.
Add some local flare. Introduce your house guests to your city by including local maps or guides with hot spots, activities and restaurants highlighted. You can also include a list of your favorite spots.
As you are putting together your welcome gift basket, ensure that every item you are including has a purpose. Be mindful of the fact that your guests may be limited on space which would prevent them from taking all of these items home. Opt for items that guests will use during their stay and one or two small keepsakes.
Be sure to visit Walmart to purchase the new sulfate free all® fresh clean ESSENTIALS® and sulfate free AVEENO PURE RENEWAL® Shampoo and Conditioner and to download coupons to save on your next purchase.
