If you’re a parent of an infant, toddler, preschooler, or school-aged child, than you know that the bedtime struggle is real. My kids need their sleep…I need my kids to sleep. And as much as I look forward to 8:00 pm each night with longing, somehow, the dream that my I’ll read my kids a story, say our bedtime prayers, and they’ll drift off into a peaceful slumber is an illusion. In between the direct protests and adamant proclamations of “I’m not tired,” come the excuses…meant to distract me while postponing said bed time.
If you’ve ever caved to your child’s request for #5MoreMinutes you’re not alone. Very often, I give in…not because I haven’t heard every excuse my kids have and have yet to give me but because I’m exhausted. And sometimes, 5 extra minutes is all my kids need to go to sleep. Inspired by Dinotrux 5 Minute Favorites, I’m sharing 7 of My Kids’ Best Bedtime Excuses.
1. I have homework to do. Neither of my kids would ever choose to do homework over anything…except sleep. When my kids suggest homework over bedtime, I concede. Either way I’m winning!
2. I have to go to the bathroom…again! While this may be a legitimate excuse, it only flies once!
3. I want to read. My son is legitimately an avid reader, but sometimes, his desire to get lost in a book includes doing so at inopportune times. Remember that a child’s sleep is just as important as his 20+ minutes per day of reading time.
4. I need to drink water…again! If I let my kids drink this much water, we’ll be dealing with excuse #2.
5. I forgot to feed my fish. Pets are a great way to teach kids responsibility and allowing our fish to go hungry for a few hours will not only reinforce the importance of bedtime, but teach my kids a valuable lesson in caring for a living thing.
6. I need to pick up my toys. If ever there was an excuse that sways me it’s this one. My kids can always stand to pick up their toys, so when they’re using this excuse for a delayed bedtime, I figure the worst thing is that my kids will have a cleaner room.
7. I’m scared of the dark. For many parents, this is the excuse that tugs at their heartstrings. If my kids have a legitimate fear of something, I use this as an opportunity to validate their fears while offering proof that will help them overcome those fears.
