5 Ways Older Adults Can Benefit From Technology

The speed at which technology is advancing is exciting. Both of my kids are in device-based learning programs, and their digital skills and technological insight continue to proliferate, often in tune with the digital space. For many, technology has streamlined everything from work and schedules to keeping in touch with loved ones both near and far. And yet, there is a segment of our population that faces growing challenges when it comes to technology.

By 2030, nearly 1/4 (22%) of the American population will consist of adults over the age of 65. Given the advances continuing to be made when it comes to health and wellness, this is exciting, yet with an aging population come challenges. In America, the three biggest threats of aging are hunger, isolation and loss of independence. Technology can be an integral component to help adults in this age bracket live healthy, independent, productive lives.

Recently, AT&T worked with local nonprofits to surprise seniors with smart devices to help them stay connected. I personally loved watching this video and the authentic gratitude expressed by something as simple as receiving a smart phone.

The aging population face a series of unique barriers when it comes to adopting technology. Physical challenges include disabilities, chronic disease or other medical conditions that make reading and/or manipulating devices difficult. Older adults may also face challenges when it comes to learning new technologies. Even when both physical and mental obstacles are overcome, older adults are often skeptical of technology and often require education as to how their quality of life can be improved (Older Adults and Technology Use).

The benefits of technology are numerous, some of which are specific to the aging population. If you have a loved one who is hesitant to adopt technology, here are 5 ways older adults can benefit from technology.

  1. Social Connection: Technology can combat the threat of isolation by giving older adults the means to have regular contact with friends and family, irrespective of where they live. Text messages, email, social networks, voice and video chat are just some of the ways older adults are staying in contact with loved ones.
  2. Independence: Technology has proven to lengthen the amount of time older adults enjoy their independence. With information at the tip of their fingers, they can problem-solve and seek out assistance on their own, boosting their confidence in their ability to care for all aspects of their lives independently.
  3. Medical Management: Technology has made it possible for adults of all ages to have immediate access to health records. With increasing age comes the possibility of chronic disease and medical conditions. Management of medications, health care providers, appointments, and medical history can now be done independently by the older adult with online tracking tools and apps.
  4. Safety: Older adults who suffer from chronic disease and medical conditions are now able to stay in their homes longer because of safety sensors that allow them access to immediate help if needed without intruding on their day-to-day lives or restricting their independence.
  5. Cognitive Stimulation: Mental decline is a valid concern amongst the elderly. Research has demonstrated that mental exercises and games, now available online via websites and apps, can delay or slow the progression of dementia-related disorders.

Very soon, my mother will enter the “older adult” age bracket. She is highly independent and I anticipate that being the case for many years. It wasn’t until my father died that she purchased a smart phone and I believe this has contributed to her overall physical, cognitive, and emotional health.

If you have an elderly loved one who can benefit from technology, I encourage you to visit Digital You by AT&T, AT&T’s digital literacy program which provides online tools, apps and resources for people of all ages. This free online resources provides information targeting a variety of populations and encompasses everything from getting started and troubleshooting to privacy and security.
