By the time my son was 1 year old, he’d already traveled 2,000 miles to see his grandparents. Travel has always been an integral part of our lives, and I could only curb my wanderlust for so long. I knew that I wanted my kids to see the world, but the challenges of traveling with kids arose immediately.
One of the biggest hurdles parents need to overcome when traveling with kids is helping them adjust to being out of their routine. Everything from sleep and mealtimes to regularity is altered by travel. But seeing my daughter meet her first Disney princess or helping my son catch his first fish is well worth the inconvenience of interrupted schedules.
I am the girl who would travel with my parents and struggle long after the trip was over with irregularity. When my young daughter came to me during a summer trip complaining of an upset tummy and an inability to “go,” I knew that we needed a safe, gentle, long-term solution.
I’ve been taking probiotics for years because my stomach can be very sensitive to certain foods. The result is improved regularity and decreased discomfort. But I needed a solution that was specifically designed for kids like my daughter. Probiotics like Culturelle Kids Regularity Gentle-Go help to restore the balance of good bacteria in the digestive tract which results in improved regularity. The active probiotic in this formula is Lactobacillus CG, a “good” bacteria that helps regulate digestive health and bowel functions. This kid-specific formula also contains inulin, a prebiotic vegetable fiber that provides 3.5 grams of dietary fiber, the equivalent of five prunes.
If you are a family that travels often, I have a repertoire of tips that can help keep you regular. What’s wonderful about these tips is that they aren’t travel-specific. You could easily apply these to your family’s day-to-day life to help your digestive help and keep you regular.
5 Tips to Keep You Regular While Traveling
- Talk about it. My daughter waited until she was uncomfortable to let me know that she was struggling with regularity. Children are often embarrassed to let their parents know that there is an issue. And some children don’t realize that there is an issue until they have not gone to the bathroom in days. An open conversation about bowel habits teaches children that this is normal and a healthy part of how a body functions.
- Hydrate. Liquids are a vital component to helping keep you regular. Be particularly vigilant about having children consume enough liquids during plane or car rides where they are sitting for prolonged periods of time. Pediatrician Dr. Jennifer Trachtenberg also recommends consuming foods like watermelon, cucumbers, oranges and grapes which have a high water content.
- Say yes to fiber. Fiber is important for cleaning the colon, making it easy for children to have a bowel movement and helping the intestines to move faster. Strive to incorporate brightly colored fruits and vegetables into your child’s diet, particularly during travel. Lentils, beans and legumes can also be good sources of fiber.
- Get moving. Travel by nature tends to be physical in nature. We hike when we are anywhere near nature and walk in big cities instead of taking public transportation. The challenge is in the getting there. Strive to take regular walking breaks on airplanes or during long car rides,
- Make time to go. Our family tends to be very active when we travel, and admittedly, creating a regular time for using the bathroom has often been put aside. Routine is particularly important for children. Dr. Trachtenberg recommends taking children to the bathroom right after a meal to avoid the temptation to hold it in too long.
