“… be radical about grace and relentless about truth and resolute about holiness…”
― Ann Voskamp
I may not always be as articulate and forthright about my faith as I’d like to be, but my relationship with God is far-reaching, touching every single aspect of my life. More than just ritual, I am striving to help my children understand important concepts about Christianity by example, through our Bible studies together, our weekly attendance at church, and real-life circumstances. I want my children to understand that they were created with a purpose and that their life has meaning. While we utilize a number of different tools to “train up a child in the way he should go,” we haven’t really utilized film/television simply because up until recently, there simply wasn’t a lot to draw from.
2014 has been the year of faith-based films, and based on their box office successes, my hope is that studios will see the value they bring to families. Earlier this year, Heaven is For Real touched families across the country with its inspiring message of faith. Based on the New York Times best-selling book by the same name, the film conveys the true story of Toddy Burpo, a father and businessman who’s son Colton recovers from a near-death experience.
When Colton begins recounting vivid memories of his visit to Heaven, Todd Burpo must find the courage and conviction to share his son’s unprecedented, life-changing experience with the world. Starring Greg Kinnear as Todd Burpo, Heaven is For Real is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Digital HD with six deleted scenes and a featurette that takes families behind the scenes for a look at what it took to bring the book to the screen. Blu-ray exclusives include The Making of Heaven is For Real and Creating Heaven, which details the production design elements that support the film’s religious themes.
Walmart Exclusive
If you purchase the film from Walmart, you’ll receive an exclusive bonus disc which includes an intimate conversation with the Burpos, 11 years after Colton’s story changed their life, reflections from Todd Burpo on the evens from his story and how they are reflected in the film, and a series of vignettes from religious leaders discussing the themes of the film and the real life lessons families can talk about after watching the film.
I found Heaven is for Real to be a wonderful conversation starter, particularly because my children are young and haven’t really delved into exactly what Heaven is. While I always enjoy the theatrical movie experience, I really appreciated having the Heaven is for Real Family Discussion Guide which facilitates discussions surrounding Heaven, Faith, and Courage.
