Crafting With Kids: Stick Art

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

Now that summer is in full swing, I’m racking my brain to find ways to keep my kids active and engaged.  We try to spend as much time exploring and doing, but on days like today, when temperatures were well over 90 degrees, all I really want to do is stay cool inside the comfort of our home.  Over the past few months I’ve been delving into crafting with the kids, and this month we decided to take a twist on the traditional kid’s picture.

Wooden craft sticks are incredibly versatile and can be used for so many projects.  Walmart sells them in a variety of sizes and shapes and their value set includes colored craft sticks which makes it that much easier to complete a craft since the painting step is eliminated.

Here is what you’ll need for the Windmill Art we created:

7 Red Jumbo Sticks

2 Green Jumbo Sticks

2 Yellow Craft Sticks

2 Blue Craft Sticks (I painted plain sticks with Acrylic Paint)

8 Skinny sticks

Peel & Stick Foam

Construction Paper

Glue

Scissors

Step 1:  Paint Craft Sticks, if necessary and allow to dry completely before handling.

Step 2: Assemble the windmill by gluing the skinny sticks (broken in half) onto the Yellow Craft Sticks.  Allow to dry.

Step 3: Layer seven red Jumbo Craft Sticks (cut in half) onto the foam to create the “house”

Step 4: Layer two blue Craft Sticks to form the roof

Step 5:  Create grass by overlapping two green Jumbo Sticks

Step 6: Use Skinny Sticks (cut in half) to create a stick wood fence on each side of the house.

Step 7:  Cut out a sun and clouds to apply to the foam when finished.

Step 8: Glue windmill onto foam

As easy as this craft looks, it does take at least a couple of hours, particularly if you decide to paint the craft sticks rather than using the colored ones in the kit. My son enjoyed the gluing and the painting but wasn’t able to cut anything yet.

There are a variety of projects that can be completed with wooden craft sticks. For more information, just visit Walmart.
