It goes without saying that investing in a child’s education reaps innumerable long-term rewards. However, with nationwide budget cuts, it seems like parents are having to purchase more items. When you combine that with necessary uniforms, shoes, or other apparel, the costs can add up.
This season, you don’t have to break the bank shopping for much needed clothing and supplies. I headed over to Walmart, armed with a $40 gift card, to see how much I could purchase. Because my son is still in preschool, he is provided all of the supplies he needs. I decided to put together a backpack that I will then donate to a child in need. At just under $40, I was able to purchase the following items:
SpongeBob Backpack: $8
SpongeBob Lunch Kit: $5.92
Pencil Case: $2.97
Notebook: $3.24
12 inch ruler: $0.47
Markers: $0.97
Colored Pencils: $0.74
Glue Sticks: $1.97
Scissors: $1.47
Mechanical Pencils: $1.47
Crayons: $1.97
Tape: $1.00
Calculator: $3.00
The grand total was just $35.76 and I purchased just about everything a child would need for school minus clothing. Many of the items are name brands with prices much lower than other retail stores. It was interesting to note that while I was shopping, I overheard two women talking about the prices of items and how they were comparison shopping to find the lowest price. Their conclusion was that minus one specific item, they had found all of the items on their list to be priced lower at Walmart. It should be noted that Walmart will match the price of any local competitor’s printed ad for an identical product.
Along with the fact that Walmart has a dedicated area for Back to School supplies, they also have a little area near the middle of this section where they house local school lists. I thought that this was brilliant for those moms (like myself) who may have forgotten the list on a shopping trip. I also found that my store’s Back to School section was still organized, clean, and well-stocked. I should mention that although most of the items you’ll need for the season can be found in Walmart’s dedicated Back to School section, you might need to visit the stationary aisle for items that aren’t as common.

Disclosure: I participate in the Walmart Moms program and am compensated for my time and honest opinions. The backpack and all of the items listed above were donated.
