Confession! Up until about a week ago, I had never cut my daughter’s hair. She’s nearly 4, and I can’t tell you how many people have glowed about her long, naturally relaxed curls. My husband and I have had this on and off debate about “when” I was going to finally give in and give her a trim, mostly because the upkeep is quite extensive. Washing and drying it is a lengthy process and I’ve gone through a number of different detanglers to find one that will allow me to comb through her hair with minimal discomfort.
One of my friends had told me that even a trim would do wonders for easing the upkeep of her hair, so I finally gave in and decided to cut just enough to even out the length. Select Walmart stores house SmartStyle salons, and since we were offered the opportunity to review their services, I thought it might be the perfect time for my daughter to have her first haircut.
SmartStyle Family Hair Salons offer affordable, quality services and are located exclusively inside Walmart stores across the country. I’m a last minute kind of gal, so the fact that appointments are not necessary works perfectly for our family. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve decided on a whim that my son needs a haircut. In fact, since we were nearing the start of the new school year, I brought him in to the salon along with my husband and daughter for family haircuts.
Before visiting our closest SmartStyle location, I called and was offered the option to make an appointment since there were 3 of us, including 2 littles that don’t like to wait. We arrived early in the morning when the salon was not busy, so I’m not certain an appointment was necessary but it gave me peace of mind.
The stylist took a few minutes before their haircuts to ask me how many inches I wanted trimmed from my daughter’s hair and how I wanted my son’s hair cut (scissors versus clippers). She was kind, gentle, and patient with each of my kids and she made them feel very comfortable. I was particularly impressed with how my daughter responded since this was her very first haircut. We saved some of her hair (I’m sappy like that) and the stylist gave her a commemorative certificate to celebrate her very first haircut. After, she was so excited she asked me if we could cut her hair again!
My husband and son each had clipper haircuts and since neither of them are very picky, they walked out of there with short, polished styles perfect for the Fall season. Each of their cuts included a wash and the price for my kids was $10.95 each and $15.95 for my husband.
I recently visited my stylist for a cut and color, so I opted not to use SmartStyle’s services but I would consider a future visit because we were very happy with our experience. As a side note, the salon carries hair care products from well-known brands including Paul Mitchell and Biolage and I couldn’t leave without picking up a bottle of Moroccan Oil!
At present, there are not a lot of SmartStyle locations in Los Angeles or Orange County which doesn’t make it convenient for regular visits, but my hope is that local Walmart stores will open salons. To find a SmartStyle location near you, visit SmartStyle.com.
