Once the weather warmed up here in Southern California, I was certain the dryness and skin irritation we’ve been experiencing would improve, since the winter months are typically the worst. Since we live in a desert, the humidity levels have been low, and the combination of warmer, dryer weather has only exacerbated the problem. Both of my kids’ hands have been incredibly irritated and somewhat painful, and the lotion we’ve been using does not seem to be helping. I strive to use organic and/or natural skin care products on my kids, but many of the products that don’t contain harmful ingredients also don’t offer the type of intensive products that hydrate and nurture skin, particularly, delicate baby skin.
A couple of weeks ago, SheaMoisture offered an immersive approach to introducing their products at Hispanicize 2015. Rather than simply allowing conference attendees the opportunity to test out their products, the brand offered hand and foot massages with their lotions, body butters, and massage oils, hair styling with their hair are products, and mini makeovers with their cosmetics. After spending nearly 4 days on and off with the brand representatives, I felt like I grasped the concept of utilizing their shea butter-based skin and hair care products to protect and revitalize without the use harsh chemicals. My skin felt incredibly soft after the massages I received, so when I learned they would be launching a line specifically for babies, I thought this may be the answer to my kids’ dry skin.
SheaMoisture’s new Raw Shea, Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Care line launched with a Head-to-Toe Wash & Shampoo and a Head-to-Toe Lotion. Like their other lines, SheaMoisture works to ensure their products are made with natural, certified organic ingredients. Specifically, the line is made with certified organic Shea Butter, Frankincense, Myrrh and Argan Oil. The Shea Butter is designed to moisturize while repairing the skin with vitamins and essential fatty acids. The Chamomile offers anti-inflammatory properties to help relieve red, irritated skin. Argan Oil helps skin to maintain its softness and smoothness due to its high content of Vitamin E.
Rather than using several products on the kids’ skin, I decided to simplify their regimen to understand if anything we have been using is irritating their skin. I’ve been limiting their baths to just once a day (without the prolonged splash fest) and cleansing with SheaMoisture’s Raw Shea, Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Head-to-Toe Wash & Shampoo. This wash is sulfate free and contains the chemicals necessary to cleanse and nourish skin. This wash is gentle yet effective and can be used on a baby’s skin, scalp and hair.
After bath-time, the kids have been using the Raw Shea, Chamomile & Argan Oil Baby Care Head-to-Toe Lotion, specifically on their hands and forearms. This lotion is thick and absorbs well into the skin without leaving a greasy residue and the antioxidants and nutrients work to hydrate skin. What’s nice about this lotion is that it doesn’t burn when applied, a challenge we’ve faced with both conventional and organic/natural skin care products. This lotion is ideal for chapped skin, dryness and irritation from rashes as well as eczema and psoriasis.
5 Skin Care Tips For Kids:
1. Less is more. Stick with a simple skin care regimen (cleanse, moisturize, protect) that doesn’t include a large number of products. In the event that your child is sensitive to one of these products, it will be easy to identify the most likely irritant.
2. Eliminate skin irritants. If your baby or older child is experiencing dryness, irritation, or itching, eliminate any potential triggers.
3. Protect skin year-round. Some of the worst cases of sunburns have occurred in overcast conditions at the beach or on the ski slope. Apply a natural, broad spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your child’s skin throughout the year.
4. Opt for organic, natural skin care products. The skin of babies and children is delicate, and opting for products with minimal chemicals makes it less likely that they will have a reaction (or irritate a present skin condition).
5. Provide adequate nutrition and rest. The skin is an organ (and in fact, the largest in your body) and requires sufficient nutrients and rest time to rejuvenate.
