Whoever thought up online shopping is brilliant. I can shop at all hours of the night…in my pajamas…and have my items delivered right to my front door without any effort. While it’s definitely easier to shop online, particularly with 2 small children, it’s inconvenient if you need something immediately.
Just over 2 months ago, Walmart introduced Pick Up Today, a service that makes it convenient for you to order online and pick up your item the same day at your local store without shipping/handling fees. The program is still very new, but Walmart is planning to expand it’s reach so that it’s available to consumers nationwide (3,600 stores).
Since the service was available at my local store, I decided to try it out. While there are a vast number of items available for online purchase, I found that in my particular store, those same day pick up items were somewhat limited (I found more of the items I was looking for with Site-To-Store). A couple of months ago, we received a Kinect/Xbox 360 and I’ve been wanting to get a fitness game for the system. There were a variety of titles available for pick up that same day (22 to be exact) so I chose Zumba Fitness. While placing my order, I opted to receive a text message to notify me when the game would be ready for pick up so I didn’t have to be near a computer to check my email. Within 3o minutes, I received notification that I could pick up my game (impressive).
Once I was ready to shop, I headed to my local store and picked up the game. My local store has a temporary pick up location in the jewelry department, since they’re remodeling the store. At present, I’m not certain where the actual pick up location will be once the remodel is complete. However, the employees were familiar with the service and retrieved my item in a timely manner. Since I had completed the purchase online, I simply provided my confirmation number and a photo ID, and I was on my way.
Some things to note about Pick Up Today:
1. You can shop for a variety of items including electronics, video games, movies/music, baby items, toys, sports equipment, outdoor living, products for the home/home improvement and automotive.
2. The availability of items for same day pick up depends on your local store’s inventory. I imagine that as the program continues to gain recognition, more items will be available for same day pick up (40,000 this year).
3. Be sure to input your local store to filter your results. This will make it very easy to identify which products you can pick up that day.
4. You can include a phone number for notifications via text, however, Walmart will only use your number for that purpose.
5. Orders placed between 6 am and 6 pm will be available for pick up the same day (typically within 4 hours). Orders placed after 6 pm will be ready the following day at 10 am.
6. Be sure to compare online v. store prices. Walmart guarantees you’ll receive the lowest price.
7. If the name of the person on the order is not the same as the name of the person picking up the item, be sure to add that name during the order process (and tell them to bring along a photo ID).
8. Be certain to pick up your item within 48 hours or it will be restocked and your account will be credited.
