It wasn’t that long ago that my kids were begging me for a tablet…in case it slipped my mind…they’re in preschool and second grade! With technology pervading every facet of our lives, my biggest concern isn’t whether or not my kids will have screen time…it’s what type of screen time is appropriate given their age and development, and the circumstances of our unique family life.
Three years ago, I was introduced to a company called Fuhu, who at the time had just launched a downloadable, parent-controlled application called Fooz Kids, which continues to offer children a safe online environment to create, connect, discover, learn and play. Today, the company continues to innovate and create experience-based products for children that are engaging, educational, safe, built-to-last, and most importantly, beneficial to their development.
I recently had an opportunity to visit Fuhu’s headquarters in Los Angeles for an experiential tour and introduction to their latest products, and from what I saw, I’m seriously impressed! The company has a saying that their products are “good enough for adults,” and the reality is that I could see myself using the nabi Headphones while traveling on a plane for a work event or attaching the nabi Square HD camera/video recorder onto my head while attempting to snorkel in Maui later this summer.
If you recognize the name, that is because Fuhu created the award-winning nabi tablet…the first Android-based tablet built specifically for kids. Admittedly, with the number of tablets marketed towards kids these days, it is difficult as a parent to sort through them all to determine which is best. Both of my kids have used my “kid-ified” iPad, and despite the time restrictions, passwords, visual monitoring, and strict control of which apps are allowed to be downloaded, they can still access inappropriate content with one wrong click. There HAS to be a better way, and for the developers over at Fuhu, the answer is in their tablets, specifically the newly-launched DreamTab HD8.
In partnership with DreamWorks Animation, Fuhu developed the DreamTab as a revolutionary digital experience giving children the tools they need to exercise their full creative potential. This tablet was created in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation’s artists, filmmakers, and innovators and combines the characters kids know and love with an innovative new operating system that offers more than 400 kid-focused features designed to transform the tablet experience! Here are just a few of my favorite features from the short time I had with the DreamTab at Fuhu’s headquarters:
nabi Time Controls: This is the piece that is missing from all of the tablets we have owned. In an ideal world, I control what content my children are taking in and the amount of time they are spending doing so. nabi Time Controls allow parents the ability to set daily limits on time, the individual apps which are used, and rules for earning additional screen time. And, if you don’t want to be the “bad guy,” select one of the animated vignettes created by DreamWorks Animation to tell your child it’s time to go outside, do some homework, or go to sleep. *Tip* Download nabiGator to remotely manage and monitor what content your child is taking in and for how long.
Dream Pro Studio: Do your kids like to draw? Are they interested in animation? Through the creative tools offered in Dream Pro Studio, kids can draw, animate, author their own books and edit movies, giving them complete freedom to express their creativity. And since aspiring artists need the right tools, the DreamTab comes equipped with the Dream Pen which is a digital stylus that uses the same technology as DreamWorks Animation’s filmmakers.
nabi Konnect: As a parent to children who are still quite young, the thought of them talking to strangers online is daunting. It’s only a matter of time, so rather than have them sneak around, I prefer that they email, share photos, or instant message through a safe online space where I control which friends and family members they are communicating with.
Wings Learning System with new Creativity Island: If a tablet doesn’t offer an educational component, the likelihood of purchasing that device decreases significantly. I wan to know that all of that time being spent on the tablet isn’t completely futile. The nabi DreamTab comes equipped with and offers access to a vast educational library. The Wings learning system is adaptive and offers children a personalized learning experience, which also aligns with Common Core State Standards.
