Both of my children tend to be grazers…they would snack all day long if allowed. While I definitely believe that smaller, frequent meals are optimal for adults and children, I have to ensure the house is stocked well with healthy foods so that my children can snack sensibly. So what are my “go-to” snacks for those days when we’re home and my kids are raiding the cabinet and fridge?
1. Hummus and Whole Wheat Pita Bread (or fresh cut veggies)
2. Cheese and Whole Wheat Crackers
3. Peanut Butter and fresh cut veggies
4. Granola and/or fruit and Yogurt
5. Popcorn (I like to make it from scratch!)
On most mornings, my daughter will eat at least half of a container of yogurt. We typically opt for the flavored varieties since I don’t think either of my children have ever consumed plain, unflavored yogurt. With flavored yogurts come the concerns regarding sugar and artificial flavoring and coloring.
Over the weekend, I picked up a few of Danon’s new Dan-O-Nino yogurt cups for my daughter. Designed with a child’s nutrition in mind, Dan-O-Nino’s yogurt cups and drinks contain twice the amount of calcium when compared to leading kids’ yogurts and are a good source of Vitamin D and protein. While the yogurt and yogurt drinks do contain sugar, you won’t find artificial colors, flavors or high fructose corn syrup. I like the fact that the yogurt cups are available in 6 and 12-packs and 6 fruity flavors. The almost 2 ounce serving is suitable for toddlers like my daughter but an older child may want a second serving so be sure to keep that in mind when looking at the nutrition label.
I typically try everything my kids eat prior to them consuming it and I have to say that I did enjoy the flavors I purchased, particularly peach and vanilla. I didn’t find the yogurt cups to be too sweet and they only contain around 7 grams of sugar per serving. The one thing I’d like to know more about is the type of milk used as we strive to consume dairy that is free from hormones or antibiotics.
