Entertaining guests can elicit anxiety even among the cleanest and tidiest. With so much to do around the holidays, I often find myself overwhelmed with the need to ensure my home is comfortable for the friends and family who come to visit during this season. At the very least, the main living and dining areas should be pristine and warm so that guests feel like they are at home.
Apart from the kitchen, the guest bathroom is the area in my home I want looking and smelling its best. This is also the space where I can get creative with seasonal decor, since the area is relatively small and lends itself well to rotating colors and styles. With the busiest entertaining season of the year upon us, I thought I’d share my best tips to prepare your guest bathroom for the holidays.
1. Keep it clean. Since the guest bathroom will likely be the most trafficked area in your home during the holiday season, ensuring it is spotless is essential. What is ironic about the guest bathroom is that very often, it is the space least attended to throughout the year, particularly if it is inside a bedroom or upstairs away from common living areas. Consider treating yourself to a professional cleaning service to ease some of the holiday stress associated with preparing your home for the season.
2. Keep it fresh. After you’ve cleaned your guest bathroom, utilize scents to create a warm, welcoming environment for guests. Purchase a few scented jar candles and rotate them throughout the year for a more seasonal aromatic ambiance.
3. Keep it simple. Since guest bathrooms are often smaller than others in the home, decor does not have to be elaborate. A plush rug, a few hand towels, and a pretty soap dispenser can transform a small guest bathroom into an inviting space that still affords the host an opportunity to showcase your own personal sense of style.
4. Keep it seasonal. Admittedly, my guest bathroom is one of the only spaces on my second level town-home that receives a mini seasonal makeover every few months because hand towels and bathroom accessories are relatively inexpensive. A change in style can be as simple as warming up or cooling down the color scheme to reflect the moods of the season. I also like to purchase inexpensive hand towels and bathroom accessories to match my current color scheme or express seasonal themes.
5. Keep it stocked. Utilize the space underneath your sink to keep the guest bathroom stocked with soap, toilet paper, tissues, and other necessary items so guests don’t have to seek you out during a holiday gathering for these items.
