We do not remember days; we remember moments.
~Cesare Pavese, The Burning Brand
As busy as my husband and I are, it surprises me that most days we manage to get a homemade dinner on the table. Getting all three of us to eat together is an entirely different feat. Up until a few months ago, my husband and I never made an effort to get us all to the table for dinner. Success was measured by our ability to inhale the food before it required reheating. As my son begins to grasp the concept of mealtimes, it’s important that we take the time to sit down as a family for the last meal of the day. It’s at the table where my husband and I catch up on each other’s lives…and where one day my son will tell us about the friend he played with at school, the grade he got on his test, and his favorite teacher.
Is sitting down at the table for dinner something of the past? According to a recent Mom Central Survey, 98% of moms think children benefit from eating meals at the table with their families on a regular basis but only 61% of those moms actually practiced this.
Libby’s has recently launched it’s Get Back to the Table Month campaign in an effort to get families back together and back to the table. On the site you’ll find family dinner planning tools, time-saving tips (to keep you out of the kitchen and with your family at the dinner table), healthy recipes, grocery shopping, and money-saving advice. Studies have shown that children who sit down with families for dinner perform better in school, have a lower risk of smoking, drinking, and drug use, have higher self-esteem, develop stronger interpersonal relationships, and develop a healthier body image (teen girls).
If you’re as busy as we are, you may want to check out the section entitled “Get Your Busy Families to the Table.” Vegetables are a healthy addition to any diet (children) and their ease of preparation will help save time during the process of making dinner. I’m loving the fact that Libby’s offers an organic option. Check out the site for more information about the campaign.
