I’ve often heard that kids who play sports do better in school, which is why last year, we introduced our son to T-ball. In these early years, it can be trial and error learning which sports my children have a passion for. At present, we’re in the midst of soccer season and it has been exciting watching my son refine his motor skills while engaging in cooperative play.
Participation in any sport requires a fee, and while it typically isn’t exorbitant, the collective cost of soccer, swim, dance, and T-ball becomes more significant. Each activity my children participate in requires appropriate gear including shoes, clothing, etc. Along with these necessities come items that make it more comfortable for families to support their child during practice and games.
This year, I found that a lot of these items could be purchased at Walmart. Soccer cleats aren’t terribly difficult to find, but they can be costly. I was really impressed to see several styles at my local store priced at less than $15! In the Sports Section, I also found shin guards starting at just under $5 and practice soccer balls. My son only needed these three items to play soccer this year and the cost was just under $30! Along with essentials, I also picked up a very nice pair of athletic pants he can use for practice.
Since soccer runs from the end of Summer through Fall, our temperatures vary, requiring us to consider what we’ll need to be comfortable outside. We like to bring a couple of chairs or a blanket, a cooler with water, cold drinks and snacks, and an umbrella to shade us from the sun. All of these items are reasonably priced and available at our local Walmart store.
After a quick walk through the store, I found that I could also purchase my daughter’s ballet shoes and leotard, and my son’s swim goggles (although trunks are no longer offered since the Summer season has concluded) all at affordable prices. I personally appreciate the fact that I can shop for each of my children’s after-school activities in one location while saving time and money. *Tip* While most athletic essentials can be found in the Sports Department, be sure to check out Apparel, Outdoor Living, and Grocery for Sideline Essentials.
