As a young girl, I loved watching my mother paint her nails and put makeup on and remember impatiently asking her when I could do the same. I don’t remember how old I was at the time, but I am almost certain it wasn’t three. Sometimes while I’m getting ready in the morning, I’ll see my daughter observing me, wide-eyed, and I know that it will only be a few years before she’ll be asking for her own makeup sessions. For now, she’s content with our mommy & me manis and pedis!
A visit to the nail salon is several years away, for many reasons, most importantly because the chemicals used are strong and potentially harmful. Thanks to companies like Piggy Paint, my daughter and I can pamper ourselves at home without the harsh odors or toxic chemicals. Traditionally, such specialty items would only be found in boutiques or natural stores so I was pleasantly surprised to find an assortment of Piggy Paint nail polishes at my local Walmart. At present, you’ll find two and three-packs of their smaller-sized polishes in fun, vibrant colors. I actually prefer the smaller sizes as opposed to the larger ones sold on Piggy Paint’s website because this is something we do occasionally, as opposed to every week.
Piggy Paint Nail Polish was developed by a mom and is made from natural ingredients. The water-based formula used is free from phthalates, formaldehyde, and acetone, commonly found in traditional nail polish. The colors are vibrant and the polish is viscous enough that we can get away with just one coat, however, it chips easily so I recommend using a top coat (sold at PiggyPaint.com). Walmart also offers a low-odor, acetone-free polish remover, although I haven’t tried it to determine it’s effectiveness.
Prior to painting my daughter’s nails, I used a few of the products included in Burt’s Bees Hand Repair Kit to give my daughter an authentic nail salon pampering experience. I am personally a huge fan of the company and it’s commitment to making all-natural, sustainable beauty products that are good for myself and the planet.
Here is a little video we put together, showcasing our Mommy & Me Mani:
After allowing her nails to dry, I used Crayola’s Nail Art Decals to give her a bit of bling! These decals simply adhere to the nail and are tiny for small tots like my daughter.
After giving her a mini-manicure, I thought I’d share a few tips I took away from the experience.
1. Have all of your supplies ready to go and work quickly, since tots like my daughter have short attention spans.
2. Wipe off any lotions or creams used prior to painting nails so that the polish adheres well.
3. If you don’t think your child will sit for very long, opt for a top coat as opposed to a second coat.
4. Use a hair dryer on low to quickly dry nails.
You can purchase products from Piggy Paint and Burt’s Bees at your local Walmart and I recommend checking out their online selection which seems to be more expansive.
