Easy Meal Planning With Spud

Posted by Caryn Bailey Leave a Comment

One of my biggest challenges each week is planning the meals for our family. My passion for healthy eating, our limited consumption of meat, and a child with food allergies means that very often, we’ll eat the same few meals over and over again. I’ve attempted various forms of meal planning, which are successful, as long as I actually continue to follow through with them.

A couple of weeks ago, I was introduced to a Spud, an Urban Delivery Service which makes it easy to receive local organic produce and groceries delivered right to our door without ever having to step foot into a grocery store.  There are no contracts, no minimum amounts required to order, and no delivery charges. Here is a quick video detailing how the service works:

As a mom to 2 small children, I’ve made it a point to make my weekly grocery run when they are at school or with my husband because it is easier and more time efficient to shop without them. But I remember a time when they were too young to be in school and I had one too many stressful trips to the grocery store.  The ease and convenience of shopping from home would have been a huge time-saver and stress reliever.

With $100 to spend, I quickly browsed Spud to begin shopping for the week.  What I initially noticed was that the site is very well organized into various categories such as Dairy, Meat & Seafood, Snacks, etc. which makes it easy to find what exactly what I’m looking for. And because I was shopping from home, I could check the fridge or the pantry to ensure I wasn’t doubling up on foods we already had.

While perusing the site, I noticed a recipe section, and decided to utilize this option to meal plan for the week. The recipes are divided into familiar categories such as appetizers, main dishes, desserts, etc. but I also noticed the site offers lifestyle-specific recipes such as those targeted towards children, those who adhere to a special diet, people on the go, and people who are budgeting their meals.

Jason and I decided on a tasty recipe for Italian-esque Stuffed Chicken Breasts which we thought the kids would enjoy.  Right below the recipe, we were given the suggested shopping list and could easily add those items to our cart. It was at this point that I realized how easy it would be to meal plan this way. I could pick out 4 or 5 recipes on the site, shop for them, and have everything I need for the week’s meals. Brilliant!

I continued shopping for our week’s groceries and found that Spud offers a wide variety of natural and organic foods, many of which we purchase on a regular basis.

Local Organic Produce

One of the things that sets Spud apart from conventional grocery delivery services is the fact that the company offers customizable produce boxes filled with local, seasonal, sustainable fruits and vegetables.  There are 2 options for the Fresh Harvest Program including a box filled with hand-selected seasonal produce chosen by Spud’s team or a fully customizable box with your produce preferences.  With the first option, you simply set the dollar amount which you would like to spend, how often you’d like a delivery, and then wait for your produce to arrive.  The second option allows for substitutions, additions, and deletions with the price automatically adjusted based on your preferences. We opted for a fully customizable box and were quite pleased with what we received.  All of the produce was fresh and flavorful although I did find my tomatoes were a bit too ripe.

Once we received the groceries, we prepared the dish and were quite impressed with how tasty it was.

Overall, we were quite pleased with our experience. While I found the prices to be a bit more than those at my local natural grocery store, those looking for the convenience of home grocery delivery will find this to be a convenient option.  I can see Spud working in a variety of ways including meal planning and juicing. Additionally, there Fresh Harvest Program is a wonderful way to experience quality, seasonal, sustainable produce.

If you’re interested in checking out Spud, you can use the code CRLAX-BAICAA to  save $25 over your first 4 deliveries. For more information, visit Spud.com.

No compensation was received for this post.  A gift code was provided to try out the service, which helped facilitate the writing of this post.
