Last fall, I had an opportunity to preview some of the newest and most popular baby items on the market at LA’s Plan a Baby Event. One of the companies represented was Prince Lionheart, a family-owned company offering products for babies and tots. Many of their latest products were on display, including their new washPOD.
When my son was a baby, I bought a regular bathtub with a cushion for infants. The tub really was too big for him, but the cushion gave me some security while I bathed my infant. Even for me, with my experience as a neonatal nurse, I find bathing infants to be a bit nerve-wracking. My son did not like baths and cried for a long time before he got used to them (which wasn’t until he was a toddler). We’d just make sure the water was warm, bathe him quickly, then get him out.
Before Plan A Baby, I had no idea another type of infant tub existed. Prince Lionhart’s washPOD offers parents a unique way of bathing their infants. Unlike infant tubs, the washPOD allows your baby to sit up and curl into the fetal position. This is a position that is most comforting for babies and eliminates the flailing that goes along with bathing in an infant tub. Because the washPOD is cylindrical, babies stay warm, and that also eliminates the stress your baby will undergo. I also like the fact that babies are contained in this tub pod. Once a baby gets wet, it can be difficult to keep a grip on them (which is why many parents don’t bathe their infants very often).
The washPOD is easy to set-up and use. You simply insert the foam cushion provided with the pod and fill it with water (be sure to mark the water level with the stickers provided so you know how much water to fill it with next time). The first time I bathed our little girl in it, I didn’t add enough water. When your baby is in the podtu, the water should be at chest level. I find the stickers helpful in making sure the water is at the right level (until she grows, of course).
The pod is designed for use at birth, and I tried it as soon as her umbilical cord fell off (about 10 days old). However, I would feel more comfortable using it when she has a bit more head control. I had my husband help me, but still felt a bit awkward with her in the pod (mostly due to her lack of head control). She didn’t mind it and I really like that she stays warm.
The washPOD retails for $24.99, can be used for infants 0-6 months, and is available online and at retailers nationwide.
I did not receive compensation for this post. I did receive a product, courtesy of the company, in order to faciliate my review.

My son was born in Germany and bath pods like this were everywhere. I wasn’t familiar with them so it seemed so crazy. But, I wish I’d known better at the time and bought one for him. They seem so smart for so many reasons!

The one I use is the original one used in Europe, the Tummy Tub! We absolutely love how it keeps my daughter warm and comfortable in the bath. I highly recommend it! We considered the washPod but after reading about safety and environmental concerns, decided to go with the tried & true TummyTub. The design is also more compact and attractive.

How neat! I have never seen or heard of these! I usually shower with my little ones. I love nursing them in the shower. Bub, however hated it until he discovered stuff falling on him and now tried to catch the water! Now with the kitchen more or less done, the new sink in, he loves bathing in the kitchen!
