A sandwich, when properly made, is a healthy, flavorful dish that can be served in your backyard with some friends or at a more formal English tea. Last week, I spent 2 days in one of my favorite cities gleaning inspiration from someone who knows a thing or two about food…and sandwiches! Bobby Flay has teamed up with Hellmann’s to help you and I make simple sandwiches that taste delicious.
As I mentioned last week, I’ve joined 8 other bloggers this year as part of Hellmann’s Club Sandwich team. Through this campaign, we’ll be sharing our favorite recipes and tips for building a sandwich that looks and tastes amazing. To kick off Build the Perfect Sandwich, we met with Bobby Flay and the Hellmann’s team for some sandwich inspiration. We watched as Bobby Flay showed us how to make three gourmet sandwiches…a Chicken Muffuletta with Spicy Olive Relish Mayonnaise, a Miami-inspired Turkey Cuban, and a twist on a New York favorite…a Turkey Reuben With Thousand Island Coleslaw. I’ll be sharing these recipes with you very soon!
Making the perfect sandwich takes skill. Bobby (because, of course, we’re on a first-name basis now) provided guidance on the art of sandwich making:
1. Be sure to spread condiments (like mayo!) on both slices of the bread to retain moisture and flavor (don’t forget the edges!).
2. If you’re going to make a hot sandwich (i.e. a panini), consider spreading Mayo (as opposed to butter) on both sides of the bread.
3. Don’t underestimate the importance of selecting selecting the right bread. A sandwich with the same ingredients can have a very different texture, presentation, and taste, depending on the type of bread used.
4. A significant part of the food experience is presentation. Bobby demonstrated cutting a sandwich on the diagonal so that all of the ingredients inside are visible.
In true Iron Chef style, he demonstrated all three sandwiches effortlessly in a short amount of time. Then it was our turn to create our perfect sandwich. With an entire spread of ingredients, I opted for a California take (but of course). Here is how I built my sandwich:
I started with a soft, whole wheat bread and spread one side with Light Mayonnaise and the other with Bobby’s Cranberry Relish. I layered provolone and roasted chicken breast on both pieces of bread and “sandwiched” (hehe) lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers in between. Lastly, I cut “The Californian” on the diagonal, just like Bobby suggested, and garnished it with fresh pickles and potato chips. Once I was done, I presented my creation to The Flay, who complimented the culinary creation. The only suggestion he had was to “crunchify it,” which in essence meant to put the potato chips in my sandwich.
What is your take on the perfect sandwich? Right now, you can visit the Hellmann’s Facebook page to discover and share tips, tricks, and techniques on the art of sandwich-making. You can also build your perfect sandwich and enter to win a variety of prizes including a kitchen essentials bundle (this week it’s an electric grill and a food processor), grocery gift cards (including the grand prize of a $5,000 gift card), and Hellmann’s/Best Foods products.
Here are a few more photos from the kick-off!
