A nameless passer-by, alone in a crowd, in a society that has become too impersonal
Quidam
Beauty, grace, and skill come together in Quidam, one of Cirque du Soleil’s original shows. Debuting for a five day run at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center and then moving on to the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario, Quidam portrays the story of Zoe…a young girl who is bored with a life that has lost all meaning. Seeking to fill the void left by parents who are distant and apathetic, she slips into an imaginary world where she meets those who would encourage her to free her soul.
It’s amazing how much can be said without words. Dramatic, live music draws the audience into the characters and their story while thrilling performances keep them on the edge of their seats. The performances are a blend of circus arts and street entertainment, executed with precision, control, and mastery. Each act builds towards the crescendo of the story and culminates in the finale…the Banquine…where fifteen artists demonstrate the agility of the human body through breathtaking synchronized acrobatics and human pyramids. The show is a perfect mix of raw emotion and playful humor. I’m constantly in awe of how something as simple as jumping rope can be transformed into a rhythmic, artistic feat.
Each Cirque du Soleil performance is unique, yet all share similar attributes including live music featuring at least one vocalist, comedic interludes, and superb circus artistry. Many of the plot lines have surreal, almost ethereal tones. There is also the organized chaos that comes with having multiple performers doing different things across and above the stage.
Quidam, like Cirque’s other works, is a masterpiece. Performances are scheduled through April 24th at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center and will conclude it’s Southern California tour at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario. For more information, just visit the website.
