U-Pick Strawberries at Kenny’s Strawberry Farm

Posted by Caryn Bailey 1 Comment

Strawberry picking is one of our favorite summer activities. And while most of the country sees the peak of strawberry season in June, Southern California’s warm days and cool nights make it an ideal climate for year-round strawberries. If you want to pick your own strawberries, the ideal time to do so at your local farm is April through July. There are several local strawberry farms in the area, but our new favorite U-Pick Farm is Kenny’s Strawberry Farm.

Strawberry Farm

Kenny’s Strawberry Farm

Located in Rainbow, California (in the Temecula Valley), this locally-owned, family-operated farm spans seven acres. The family chose this location for its climate and location away from the city. What we love about Kenny’s Strawberry Farm is the ability to pick our own strawberries, support a locally-owned farm, and learn more about where our food comes from.

Strawberry season at Kenny’s Strawberry Farm runs February through July, however, opening is dependent on weather and supply. Be sure to check their website or social media channels for up-to-date information on opening times.

Strawberries are sold by the bucket, and each bucket costs $15. The bucket is generous in size and can hold approximately 4 pounds of berries. We found that to be sufficient for our family, although we did manage to eat them all in just a few days. There is no entrance fee.

Picking Strawberries on the Farm

You handle your own strawberries and payment is completed outside in order to ensure appropriate social distancing and compliance with COVID-19 recommendations.

Employees are wearing masks and face coverings are recommended when entering/exiting the farm and in close proximity with others. While picking strawberries, we felt comfortable removing our masks because the expansive layout makes it easy to maintain more than 6 feet of distance.

The farm also includes a market stand with a few products available for purchase and picnic tables spread out for social distancing.

How to Pick the Best Strawberries

Unripe Strawberry
  • Look for berries that are vibrant in color
  • Avoid berries that are brown or shriveled
  • Green caps on the top indicate the strawberries are good
  • Remember that once strawberries are picked, they do not ripen any further
  • Once home, store strawberries in the refrigerator and consume within a few days
  • Wash strawberries right before consuming. If you wash them after picking, the strawberries are likely to mold.
