At the heart of Disney are the stories that bridge generations, so it comes as no surprise that Disney Interactive’s latest gaming initiative, announced last week, would provide a way for families to create stories and play experiences surrounding their favorite characters. Disney Infinity, which will be released in June of 2013, will allow users the ability to play with all of their favorite Disney characters without limits.
Can you imagine Dash from The Incredibles and Lightning McQueen from the Cars trilogy racing? What about Jack Sparrow in a world with castles as opposed to the high seas? It will be possible with Disney Infinity. If you can dream it, you can create and play it!
“Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life,” said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager, Avalanche Software.
Years in the making, Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter initially began conceiving the idea for Disney Infinity while working on Toy Story 3 video game. Disney is transforming the world of video gaming into an immersive, engaging experience that will inspire families to play, create, and imagine together. And because Disney wants to encourage family play, all games will be multi-player.
So what is Disney Infinity?
A brand new game universe from Disney Interactive that will integrate collectible character figures that come to life in the game. As John Lasseter described it, “it is one of the most creative gaming programs the world has ever seen.” The figures will provide users experiences that are true to the characters and their stories.
The game is highly story-driven, and in the experience called the Play Set, players will solve challenging puzzles, battle enemies and explore iconic locations. Along the way, they’ll collect characters, vehicles, settings, and more from each world that can then be saved to their virtual Toy Box, which can then be accessed to build and customize unique virtual worlds. With the Toy Box comes an online, social component where players can share their creations with friends.
When Disney Infinity launches this June, there will be three starter packs that will include the software and a set of figurines, beginning with The Incredibles, Pirates of the Caribbean, and Monsters, Inc.
Here are just a few facts that may help you get a better grasp on this innovative new gaming concept:
- Disney Infinity will launch in June of 2013 on all consoles (Xbox360, PS3, Wii, Wii-U, PC), mobile devices (tablets and smart phones) and online
- Disney Infinity will launch with a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces so players can expand and customize their experience and 17 character figures for play in both the Play Set and Toy Box modes
- Disney Infinity will bring characters from Disney and Pixar films to play together
- All games within Disney Infinity will be multi-player including 2-player cooperative play in the structured adventures and 4-player cooperative play in the Toy Box mode
- Disney Infinity will provide the platform for infinite storyline possibilities and creative play that inspires unique, individual customization of each adventure
We are a family that loves Disney and this new creative way to game is going to transform the way my children play. As a parent, I think what I appreciate most about this new gaming platform is the endless ways my children will be able to create their own experiences. The only limit to how they play will be their imagination. Unlike many video games, that can be overcome, I see Disney Infinity having the type of longevity that will allow for years of family play.
As we near the launch of Disney Infinity, I’ll be sharing more information including interviews from the press conference.
