After the third phone call from the head of my son’s soccer organization, nearly pleading with me to consider coaching a youth team, I finally acquiesced. Right before I signed on the virtual dotted line, I made a statement I immediately regretted. “You do know that I’m a woman right?” In retrospect, I laugh because it couldn’t be more obvious that I was a woman. But what surprised me most about this conversation was his follow-up statement to me…”Why does every mother I call say the exact same thing?”
Growing up, my parents supported every endeavor I undertook, never once entertaining the thought that I couldn’t do something simply because of my gender. My childhood was filled with activities that included ballet and horseback riding…doll play and camping under the stars. Had I wanted to play sports or become a doctor, I have no doubt in my mind that my parents would have done everything they could to help me achieve those goals. So why is it that girls are constantly being sent the message that they can’t do something?
COVERGIRL’s latest #GirlsCan Movement was initiated to inspire women to overcome societal barriers and stigmas that send the message that they are somehow inferior and therefore unable to accomplish a prescribed set of goals. Every time a woman embraces a challenge, those barriers are broken down and “can’t” becomes “can.” This message of empowerment is important, particularly for young women who may be exploring their identity to figure out who they are and who they want to be. As my daughter gets older, I’ll be having these conversations with her, inspiring her to be and do anything she sets her mind on.
COVERGIRL, in partnership with Walmart, will donate $50K to Dress for Success, an international non-for-profit organization that promotes the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support, and career development tools to help them thrive. This incredible organization has helped more than 775,000 women aspire towards self-sufficiency and I think it is the perfect organization to embody the #GirlsCan movement.
If you’re interested in supporting the #GirlsCan movement, I encourage you to pick up one of the specially marked packs of COVERGIRL Flamed Out Mascara or Pro Mascara at your local Walmart. This would make a wonderful and inspirational gift for a young woman this holiday season. You could use this gift to celebrate her beauty while sending her the important message that #GirlsCan!
When someone tells me I can’t do something, it compels me to want to change the status quo. I’ve slept alone in the Klamath Mountains, an area known for it’s active Black Bear population, backpacked all over Europe, pitched a tent without any assistance, and drove the entire Road to Hana around the island of Maui. My hope is that my daughter will see her mom’s courageous, adventurous side and be inspired to live out her dreams by replacing “can’t” with “can.”
