No compensation was received for this post. While I was invited to the Club Penguin Headquarters by Disney and provided travel/accommodations, our experience with the app reflects our own thoughts/opinions.
With nearly 400,000 iPad apps available in the app store, it’s difficult for parents and children to decide which ones are safe, engaging, and worthy of downloading. I have to admit that despite the relatively inexpensive cost of apps (most are less than $5), I still naturally gravitate towards those that are free. I appreciate the ability to delete something without a thought if it isn’t appropriate, relevant or engaging. Additionally, I look for brands I recognize, such as Disney, and am more willing to spend money on those apps since I have confidence that my children will learn and have fun in a safe environment.
At 3 and 6, my children still don’t spend a lot of time on our laptop computers. Apart from the fact that they aren’t as savvy about working a mouse and a keyboard, I am more comfortable having them play on a device that isn’t nearly as cost-prohibitive to replace. So while we absolutely love Club Penguin, I was really excited to learn that they were launching an iPad app during my time in Canada. We finally spent some time with the app and I’m happy to say that we definitely give it two thumbs up!
Club Penguin is the number one virtual world for kids across the globe, and what makes it unique is its combination of social networking and online gaming with education sprinkled throughout. Now that we have the free app on our iPad, both of my children have spent a lot more time playing and engaging.
My Penguin, free via the iTunes store, now makes it easy for children to interact in the virtual world of Club Penguin on-the-go. The app features 6 games, including the new multi-player Card-Jitsu Snow, and allows players the ability to customize their penguin’s looks, unlock mobile exclusives, and stay connected to friends and the happenings at Club Penguin.
After playing and exploring the app, here are some of our favorite features:
Brand New Games and Mobile Exclusives!
My son hasn’t spent a lot of time exploring the Card-Jitsu aspect of Club Penguin so he was excited to practice his ninja skills in this new game.
Exclusive to My Penguin is the Sushi Drop Game where players can win coins, bonus items, and treasures, all of which will sync between the app and your Club Penguin account online.
Synchronized Accounts!
One of the best features of the app is it’s ability to seamlessly transfer coins and purchased items to a player’s online account. Any changes you make to your Penguin via the app will show up when you log in online.
Up-To-Date Information!
With mobile access to the “What’s New Blog,” players can watch new videos and get sneak peeks while on-the-go.
My Penguin includes four of the most popular games from Club Penguin, the Penguin Style catalog, and some social interaction (i.e. the ability to throw snowballs at penguin friends online or add new friends on-the-g0). Eventually, the goal is to expand the app so that the experience mimics that of Club Penguin’s virtual online world.
