I have to admit that Mondays can be a little hectic in our home. Our weekends are usually consumed with sports and family activities and the relaxed schedule often means waking up early on the first morning of the week can be a bit of an adjustment. Along with ensuring my kids are organized for the new week, I try to use Sunday nights to make them something special for breakfast on Monday mornings. This allows for a more leisurely morning and it’s typically a dish I don’t have the time during the week to make.
Because Mondays can be rough even for myself, I often think about what I can do to make the transition just a little easier. It’s one thing to be organized and prepared for the week ahead. But I want our family to be excited for all of the opportunities a new week presents. A new week is really a chance for new beginnings in school, on the field, at work, and in life.
Shine It Forward
Jimmy Dean’s latest campaign, Shine It Forward, is inspiring families to redefine Mondays. I absolutely love this shift away from the real or perceived stress that often defines the typical Monday towards something good. #MondaysForGood encourages people to do something good for someone else, no matter how big or small. In the midst of a busy week, I guarantee that if you start Monday off by taking the focus off yourself for a moment and think about how to brighten someone’s day, you’ll get your week off to a great start. This week, along with surprising my kids with a special morning meal, I also helped our elderly neighbor with her trash cans. I know it almost sounds too simplistic. But the look of surprise and relief on her face to have someone help her with such a mundane task was all of the encouragement I needed to know that this was exactly what she needed today.
Simple Ways To Brighten Someone’s Day
I know you’re likely thinking that you don’t have a single moment to squeeze in anything else. So I thought I’d share some simple ways to brighten someone’s day. In many instances, these acts of kindness are free and won’t take but a few minutes of your time. Can you imagine the world of difference you’ll make in someone’s life by simply doing something good?
1. Write a note of encouragement
2. Offer to help a neighbor with a simple project or task
3. Volunteer (during the holidays there is an increased need for people to donate their time)
4. Allow a parent with young children to go ahead of you while waiting in line
5. Hold the door open for a stranger
6. Bring a meal or bake a dessert for a neighbor, a co-worker, a family member, or a friend
7. Surprise your child with love notes in their lunch box
8. Say hello to a stranger, particularly if he/she is alone
9. Give your spare change to a worthy cause
10. Pay for the person’s coffee in back of you
Kindness is Contagious
The very best way to inspire kindness is to model it. I invite you to join me TODAY and share how you’re helping to Shine It Forward. Jimmy Dean is petitioning to make #MondaysForGood a national holiday…can you imagine the positive chain reaction that will be inspired? Share your story of how you helped someone on this beautiful first Monday in November on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram using the hashtag #MondaysForGood. You can also sign the petition to help recognized #MondaysForGood as a national holiday by visiting JimmyDeanShineOn.com.
