When I was pregnant with my son, I ate macaroni and cheese practically every single day, since I couldn’t tolerate much else. Perhaps that is why both of my children enjoy it so much. This comfort food, at its most basic form, has become a staple in our home and we’ve enjoyed elevated, healthified, and even vegan versions of it. When I was asked to check out a new hybrid version of one of our favorite foods, I was intrigued.
Last week, Pepperidge Farm introduced Goldfish Mac & Cheese, which merges a long-time snacking favorite with one of America’s favorite comfort foods. Available in four different varieties, each are made with real cheese sauce and free from artificial preservatives and synthetic colors (although I should mention that this is still a processed food). As you might expect, the pasta feature the brand’s signature smiling Goldfish and the cheese profile of the childhood snack (along with a few new flavors).
Last week, my daughter and I got to taste-testing since my son cannot tolerate dairy and my husband is a macaroni and cheese snob. As you can imagine, the draw for children are the Goldfish, while parents will appreciate the lack of artificial ingredients. The pasta should be boiled for the amount of time required so that it isn’t chewy (I didn’t cook it long enough the first time since I was aspiring for an al dente version). Simply add milk and butter to the cheese packet to create the sauce and complete the dish.
In all honesty, I could not get my daughter to try the Nacho Cheese or Cheesy Pizza varieties. We like our macaroni and cheese in its simplest form so unfortunately, I can’t comment on the taste of those flavors. We preferred the Cheddar variety over the Butter Parmesan and thought that it tasted much like the macaroni and cheese you’re accustomed to getting outside of the home. I personally didn’t notice any semblance to the Goldfish Crackers.
While this is definitely an alternative when we’re pressed for time, I still prefer to make my macaroni and cheese from scratch.
Pepperidge Farm’s Goldfish Macaroni and Cheese is available exclusively at Walmart for $0.98 a box.
