Road trips, play dates, swimming, and more…that is what our summer has involved and we still have many sunny days left to play. In just a few weeks, we’ll be heading on our family vacation. This year, we’re road-tripping it and to be certain we’re prepared, I utilized State Farm’s Learning Center as a resource for tips on ensuring our vehicle is ready for the trek.
Here are some of the tips I found valuable as we prepare are vehicle for the road:
- Get your car serviced before you travel including a check of the engine and other systems such as the air conditioning and cooling, the tires, brakes, lights and windshield wipers.
- Check the air pressure in all tires, including the spare, to make sure they are properly inflated.
- Replace ragged wiper blades.
- Inspect batteries and battery cables for corrosion, cracks, and dirt.
- Change the oil and filter according to manufacturer’s service interval specifications.
- Test your car’s interior and exterior lights.
- Keep an emergency kit in your trunk – jumper cables, tools, water, emergency flares, and a flashlight and gloves – just in case.
With two small children in tow, we definitely don’t want to spend any amount of time on the side of the road in the summer heat.
State Farm’s Learning Center is a valuable resource for information on insurance, car and home maintenance, finances, safety, and more. As I was perusing the site, I found articles on road trips, packing tips for traveling with a baby, and an entire section with articles on safety including how to install a newborn car seat.

At the start of each season I buy several bottles of sunscreen. One for the diaper bag, one to leave in the car, one to leave by the back door. I’m never tempted to skip putting it on the kids b/c it there is always a bottle handy…no nasty sunburns here!
I subscribe to your RSS feed.
Always, Always put on sunscreen! It only takes one bad sunburn to get cancer and it is so easy to prevent.
We have a portable jumper so if you ever need power it is always there for you. It’s not very big and can be such a big help. Plus it has air for tires too. It’s not very big and good to have in the trunk.

With this heat wave, it is easy to get heat exhaustion. If your car overheats, do not immediately get out and spend an hour trying to figure out whats wrong. That happened to us and we all almost landed in the hospital. If it happens and you are close to a store, roll up all the windows, and go inside the store for a while. It’ll cool the car down enough for you to handle it, and you will spend less time outside. People/pets before cars.
Always make sure you carry lots of water with you when travelling–good for many emergencies.
Stay hydrated! I never leave the house without a few bottles of water in my carry-all bag.

Make sure you supervise all children when they are in the pool. Remove the ladder from the pool when not in use. Make sure in-ground pools have a fence around them and that the gate is locked when not in use.

My best summer safety tip is: Do not allow swimmers near the back of houseboats that are docked. If the boat’s generator is running, which is most likely in an occupied houseboat, then deadly carbon monoxide is being produced in the air near that generator. Every year people drown from fumes from houseboat generators.

Never take your eyes off your kids when they’re in/near water, whether it’s a pool, lake, or even bathtub
I beleive that ensuring that you kids learn to swim early is important. While they will always need to be closely supervised, it is a valuable skill.

Don’t overestimate the ability of your child – especially when it comes to swimming….kids get tired and cranky and their skills may suffer which can get dangerous. Make sure they get rest between all their hard play.

My best summer safety tips… well, first of all is the importance of sunscreen. Staying hydrated is important. When it comes to traveling, be sure everyone is in seat belts at all times and have a “safety meeting” with children before leaving where you talk about what to do if separated when stopping for bathroom break, a restaurant, etc. Katharina angelsandmusic[at]gmail[dot]com

Living in earthquake country, you always have to be prepared. Not just at home and the office, but also where you spend a good percentage of your day commuting. We have emergency kits in the trunk of all of our cars, each with emergency rations of high calorie food and water, safety blankets, gloves, rubber soled shoes and flashlights. Making sure your family has the tools they need to get through the unexpected is the safest bet around.

If you live on the coast, keep an eye on the tropics. Just takes a quick visit to the National Hurricane Center website to see if anything his headed your way. If it is, start preparing early, so it’s less stressful on you and your family and you’re more likely to remember everything.
