January is almost over, and I just learned that it’s Thyroid Awareness month.  As a nurse, I know where my thyroid is.  My mom has a long history of thyroid nodules that she watches and my best friend is takes medication for her hypothyroidism.  Diseases of the thyroid are more common than most people think.

So what is the thyroid and where is it located? It is a small gland located in the middle of the lower neck, which produces hormones that regulate many functions including temperature, weight gain, and weight loss.

What are some signs that my thyroid may not be functioning properly?

  • sudden weight gain or increase in body fat
  • inability to lose weight despite proper diet and exercise
  • fatigue, insomnia or restless sleep, anxiety or panic attacks
  • gas, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation
  • chronic sinusitis or lingering infections

If I experience any of these signs, what should I do? Be sure to see your physician who can perform a physical exam and a blood test to find out if your thyroid is functioning appropriately.

  26. I’m so glad to see awareness about fibromyalgia becoming more mainstream. My sister has been suffering from this for eight years and it almost ripped our family apart because we didn’t understand it or believe her in the beginning. I’m glad I just became a fan on facebook so I can follow developments. Thanks for raising awareness!

  45. Hi, I became a Fibro360 fan on Facebook. I am already subscribed to your blog. Thanks for making people more aware of this disease, hopefully we can band together and work towards a cure. In the very least it will give us empathy towards Fibromyalgia sufferers.
    I have Hypothyroidism myself , it was diagnosed when I was 30, 18 years ago. daily medicine keeps it under control.

    you forgot to mention sudden weight loss, sometimes there is too much thyroid hormone which can be just as bad but more rare

  82. I’m a fb fan (Laura G) and had no idea Fibro and hypothyroid (which I suffer from) where connected. Two aunts and two cousins (not the children of the former) suffer from Fibro. Thanks for putting me in touch with such an informative group.

  98. I had mine checked in December. My Dr told me mine was perfect. I thought that the reason I couldn’t loose weight was because of thyroid issues.. nope.. I guess I just need to work harder.
