I keep hearing the catch phrase “going green” to describe what people are doing to save the planet. Everything from conserving electricity, to recycling, to buying organic. I have always tried to eat healthy by avoiding refined sugars, opting for whole grain options, increasing the fiber in my diet, and avoiding red meat and the other white meat. If I could eat enough of the right veggies to be a vegetarian I would. But since that takes way to much planning and work : ) I do eat fish and poultry. When I got pregnant with Josh, I started becoming more conscious of what I ate although it was very difficult when we were living in Edinburgh. When I came back and went on bedrest, I really started doing my research trying to figure out how I could avoid gaining too much weight since I was inactive for so long. While doing research, I began to read tons of articles about the “stuff” that is in our foods. From mercury in fish, hormones in dairy and poultry, and pesticides on produce, I decided to check out Whole Foods. I am hooked! If I could afford to do all my shopping there I would but I would eat us out of house and home (literally!). When I told Jason I wanted to go green and buy everything organic and natural at Whole Foods, he laughed and asked me if I wanted to go back to work yesterday! So, I pick and choose what I feel is important to buy at Whole Foods and do the majority of my shopping at Ralphs and Costco. If you’ve ever been to Whole Foods it is amazing. Healthy food does not have to taste bad! Corn meal pizza crusts that melt in your mouth, green tea sodas that taste better than Coke or root beer, goat’s milk ice cream (for the lactose intolerant like me) that’s better than any cow’s milk ice cream I’ve ever had, oreo knockoffs without the hydrogenated oils or high fructose corn syrup, and waffles and pancakes that have protein and fiber AND taste good are among my favorite indulgences. I could go on and on about how wonderful Whole Foods is but I’ve actually got to go and do some shopping! : )
